SAN DIEGO – San Diego Men's Tennis'
Ryan Keckley and
Alex Funkhouser merited the Intercollege Tennis Association Southwest Region Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year awards respectively, Tuesday.
The week prior USD was tabbed as the top-ranked team in the Southwest region, ahead of the likes of UCLA, USC, Cal and Pepperdine. Juniors
Stian Klaassen and
Oliver Tarvet were placed as the region's top doubles pairing and Tarvet the No. 2 singles player in the Southwest. Grad
Savriyan Danilov was the No. 12 singles player in the region.
Keckley's 10
th year at the helm of the program was a historic one that culminated with the team posting a 25-3 record, a program-best .862 winning percentage and hosting it's first ever NCAA Tournament Regional.
Funkhouser, his third season with the Toreros, also made a big impact on the on-court results, notably in the fall when he became just the fifth coach ever to lead both a singles player and doubles pairing (Tarvet and Klaassen) to sweeps of the ITA All-American National Championship titles.
In addition to the aid of assistant Carlos Bracho, the staff led the Toreros to most notably the following feats in 2024-25:
- The highest in-season and year-end ITA Team Rankings (No. 6 & No. 9)
- All-American Honors: Ollie Tarvet (Singles & Doubles), Stian Klaassen (Doubles)
- First-ever qualification and quarterfinal finish at ITA National Indoor Championships
- WCC Champions: Regular Season & Tournament
- WCC Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year (Keckley's Fifth Conference Honor)
- 20th Team NCAA Tournament Appearance
- Record eight matches unbeaten to start the season
- Tarvet & Klassen: No. 13 is the best final doubles ranking in program history
Keckley is the second USD head-man to claim the regional award, first since three-time winner Brett Masi, last in 2015. Funkhouser is the fourth Torero to be named region assistant of the year, first since Rich Bonfiglio in 2018. Keckley won that award in 2012.
