SAN DIEGO – The University of San Diego men's and women's basketball programs will welcome some of the most respected names in the game to campus for the inaugural USD Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday, Aug. 9. The free, one-day event is open exclusively to verified basketball coaches across all levels in Southern California.

Hosted by San Diego head coaches Blanche Alverson and Steve Lavin, the clinic will take place inside USD's newly completed Basketball Performance Center, a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of campus.

Featured Coaches:
  • Mike Brown – Head Coach of the New York Knicks, 2009 & 2023 NBA Coach of the Year

  • James Borrego – Associate Head Coach for the New Orleans Pelicans; previously served as Head Coach of the Charlotte Hornets

  • David Fizdale – Assistant Coach for the Phoenix Suns; also held head coaching roles with the New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies

  • Beth Burns – Associate Head Coach at USC; led San Diego State to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and is the program's all-time wins leader

"We're incredibly excited to welcome coaches from across the region to our beautiful campus," said Blanche Alverson, USD head women's basketball coach. "This clinic is about learning from proven leaders in the sport, building community, and investing in the future of the game. The lineup of speakers is world-class, and we hope every coach leaves with tools and inspiration they can bring back to their own teams."

The clinic will be among the first major events hosted inside the USD Basketball Performance Center — a $35 million, 28,000-square-foot facility designed to support the holistic development of student-athletes and elevate the future of Torero Basketball. Located in the heart of campus, the center features a full-length basketball court with a viewing terrace, a dedicated shooting court, sport-specific strength and conditioning facilities, and advanced sports medicine and hydrotherapy spaces. It also includes team locker rooms and lounges, a film room, and staff offices with an exterior balcony offering sweeping views of Tecolote Canyon and Mission Bay.

"Clinics like this are about more than just Xs and Os," said Steve Lavin, USD head men's basketball coach. "They're an opportunity to exchange ideas, explore leadership philosophies, and reflect on how we grow programs and people. Hosting it inside our new Basketball Performance Center, with some of the most respected minds in the game, makes it a truly special setting."

Covering key topics such as player development, team culture, leadership, and game strategy, the clinic will deliver high-level instruction typically reserved for collegiate and professional environments. With its elite speaker lineup and hands-on format, the event is designed to equip coaches with immediately applicable tools as they prepare for their 2025-26 seasons.

"This clinic reflects our broader vision for USD Athletics — bringing thought leaders together, investing in development, and using our platform to elevate the game at every level," said Kimya Massey, USD Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics. "Hosting this event in our new Basketball Performance Center speaks to the type of program we're building and the community we want to engage."
