Nemo Beach Erupts, Leads Toreros to 3-1 Victory over Team Chile

Junior outside hitter totals 18 kills to help Team USA earn second win as part of 2025 World University Games in Berlin

BERLIN — Nemo Beach erupted for 18 kills on Sunday, leading San Diego volleyball to a 3-1 win over Team Chile at Sportforum Große Halle while representing the United States in the 2025 World University Games.

The Americans won the first frame 25-20, then had the script flipped on them when they dropped set two by the same score. Team USA cruised to a 25-13 victory in the third set to pull ahead 2-1, then hung on to prevail in a thrilling 27-25 decision in the fourth and final frame.

Beach's big afternoon saw her pace the match in kills as she added six digs and a block. Minnesota graduate transfer Kali Engeman set forth her strongest performance since joining the Toreros this spring, totaling 12 kills of her own and four blocks, which helped Team USA out-block the Chileans by a 9-4 margin. And Kylie Munday put together a double-double, racking up 10 digs to go with her 43 assists.

After taking a 3-2 lead early on, the Americans didn't trail again in Sunday's opening frame. Team Chile tied the set multiple times and got as close as 21-19, but Team USA never allowed its opponent to pull ahead.

A 3-0 run to open set two helped Team Chile bounce back and lead for the entirety of the second frame. Team USA got within three points down the stretch when BayLea Sparks notched a clutch kill, but the Americans got no closer.

The Chileans and Americans battled back and forth to begin set three, and Team USA led by just a one-point, 8-7 margin before embarking on a 6-0 run to make it 19-9 in their favor. That lead swelled to a match-high 11 on a kill from Beach, then Kennedy Osunsanmi helped lock in the victory with a kill.

With her team tied 18-18 with Team Chile in set four, Engeman hammered a kill home to put Team USA ahead by a point. Beach and Munday added on with a kill and a service ace, then Osunsanmi struck again to bring the game to match point. The Chileans managed to stave off the Americans for a moment, but a kill from Isabel Clark and an attack error by Chile ultimately gave Team USA all it needed to win a wild 27-25 decision in the fourth and emerge victorious by a score of 3-1 in the match.

From July 16-27, 2025, San Diego volleyball will join around 8,500 other student-athletes and officials from over 150 countries in competing for medals in 18 sports at the World University Games, one of the largest multi-sport events in the world. The Toreros will be representing the USA as the nation's only women's volleyball team in the Games.
