Season Preview: 2025 Las Toreras Women's Soccer

San Diego women’s soccer is set to kick off it’s 2025 campaign – year two under Head Coach Greg LaPorte – Thursday night in the home comforts of Torero Stadium against Cal Poly at 7 p.m.

‘Las Toreras’ are coming off an undefeated spring season with a 14-2 goal differential in six matches. With the new roster they continued that streak into the summer 2025 preseason, having drawn at SDSU and controlling Arizona Western at home already this month.

From day one, the energy was different. Our starting point was stronger, our fitness tests were faster, and our freshmen didn’t just show up – they showed off.
Head Coach Greg LaPorte

In LaPorte’s inaugural season as USD women’s soccer’s head man in 2024, the Toreros tripled their win total from the year prior, including the team’s first conference win since 2021 and a draw in the season-finale against national No. 11 Santa Clara. USD hopes to carry on that exponential growth in 2025.

This year, you’re going to see us be brave with the ball on buil-dout and aggressive in the press. That means more chances created, more goals, and the occasional ‘I just blinked and suddenly we had the ball again’ situation. We’ve added experienced players who bring grit and leadership, along with young talent that can run.

The Roster

After 42.8% of the team's goals, 41.7% of assists, 100% of goalkeeper minutes and the vast majority of defensive back line minutes came from underclassmen in 2024, that youthful core of the roster returns. This includes WCC All-Freshman recipient, defender Ella Callanan.

Also returning is the team’s 2024 points and goals leader, junior midfielder Mikayla Abrenica, as well the minutes leaders, junior goalkeeper Elise Medrano and junior defender Kate Sealy. Senior midfielder Kylie Smith and senior forward Josefine Schlichting will captain the squad in 2025.

Around the returning core, the lineup has been bolstered with experienced and promising talents.

Grad-transfer Abigail Colton, a center midfielder, comes home to her native San Diego County after four years at Wake Forest where in 2024 she played in all 24 matches, including starting each match in the Demon Decons run to the National Championship game. Senior Emma Gonzalez joins USD’s back line after being a key part of UC Riverside’s defense for three seasons and brings with her experience with the Puerto Rico Women’s National Team.

Forward Amanda Anders highlights the freshman class and provides versatility and scoring ability up top. The San Marcos, Calif. native and highly-touted recruit comes to Alcala Park where her mother, Sherice Bartling, was a Torero standout. Paige Bickley provides support at the back while Gianna Melton, Makenna Liebman and Hailey Vermilyea can on the wings and in the middle.
