Chloe Walls Named Player of the Week after Stellar Debut in Goal

SAN DIEGO – Torero women's soccer's redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chloe Walls was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week Monday following stellar performances in her first two career collegiate games and starts.

In her career debut, Walls got the start on Thursday against UC Irvine, preserving a clean sheet shutout with five saves, three of which were in one-v-one situations as the Toreros battled to a 0-0 draw.

In her second career appearance, the Chula Vista, Calif. native started again on Sunday at UC Santa Barbara, making another five saves and only allowing one goal in the 1-1 tie to move her career and season save percentage to 90.9%, which leads the conference.

Walls is the first Torero to win WCC Defensive Player of the Week since fellow GK union teammate, redshirt junior Aliya Garrett, after she made in her career debut in last season's finale, making 10 saves in a 1-1 draw against 11th-ranked Santa Clara, on Nov. 6, 2024. USD has won conference player of the week honors in back-to-back weeks to start the season after freshman Amanda Anders collected the offensive honor for her brace in her first career start on Aug. 14.

The Toreros are unbeaten in three matches to start the season for the first time since 2021 and will look to extend that streak to four for the first time since 2010 in their next match, at home on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. against CSUN in Torero Stadium for Catholic Schools Day. USD topped CSUN 2-0 in Northridge last season.
