HONOLULU — Twenty-four hours after prevailing in five sets against Utah State to begin its 2025 season, San Diego volleyball went the distance again.
The result on night two of the four-team Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic hosted by Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center?
Another gritty win on the back of another electric offensive performance from
Nemo Beach, this time a 28-kill effort in which she hit at a scorching .364 clip.
The Toreros' 3-2 (25-15, 23-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-13) victory was bolstered by a dominant double-double from setter
Kylie Munday, who racked up 51 assists and 24 digs as she helped USD hit .299 as a team on the match.
Her offensive precision helped
Isabel Clark add 16 kills of her own and
Kali Engeman contribute 11 more while hitting a robust .435.
San Diego (2-0, 0-0 WCC) trailed for most of the opening frame before back-to-back kills from Beach pushed the Toreros in front, 20-19.
Maya Kitna and Engeman broke the tie with key kills down the stretch, then Beach found her mark again to close things out and win a 25-21 decision.
Set two was nearly a mirror image of the one before, except it was the Toreros who let the set slip away, falling to Marquette (1-1, 0-0 Big East) by a narrow 25-23 margin.
But USD bounced back in resounding fashion in the following frame, breaking a mid-set 11-11 tie to prevail 25-15 via five kills apiece from Beach and Clark.
The Toreros chased by as many as four late in the fifth period, and were behind until Clark tied it at 12-12 and 13-13. Clark and Engeman then teamed up for a combo block to finally push USD ahead, 14-13, and bring things to match point.
And it was Clark who sealed the win for San Diego in the end, earning her team a stirring 15-13 win in the fifth set and a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in the match when she hammered her final kill of the evening.
