Toreros Hit the Road to Face Gonzaga

USD will be looking to start a new winning streak after defeating Pepperdine last Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash.– Returning to the court following a bye on Thursday, the San Diego women's basketball team (7-12, 1-5 WCC) are back in the Pacific Northwest as they're set to face Gonzaga (13-5, 5-1 WCC) On Saturday, January 17 at 2:00 p.m. from the McCarthey Athletic Center. 

USD is looking to start a new winning streak after taking down Pepperdine in their last time out, as the Toreros are still seeking their first road victory of the season. 

FIRST WCC WIN SECURED 

  • USD picked up their first conference victory last time out as they defeated Pepperdine by a 54-51 final score in the JCP last Saturday afternoon. 
  • It was a strong overall team performance for the Toreros against the Waves as Hallie Rhodes scored a team-best 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in her 38 minutes of action. 
  • Providing a great spark off the bench against the Waves, Malia Tharpe scored eight key points and Helen Holley was a game-best +15 in her 21 minutes on the court against Pepperdine. 
  • Putting on a show routinely since conference play started, Kylie Ray ranks third in the WCC with 19.5 PPG and is second in the league in free throw percentage at 89% from the charity stripe as she's emerged as one of the top players in the league.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS GONZAGA

  • Saturday afternoon's matchup in Spokane will be the 80th all-time matchup between the WCC foes as the Toreros will be making their final trip to The Kennel as conference opponents with Gonzaga joining the re-shaped Pac-12 at the end of the 2025-26 athletic year. 
  • The Bulldogs lead the all-time series by a 56-23 margin as they enter play on an 18 game winning streak over San Diego. 
  • In last season's matchup from Spokane, the Bulldogs picked up a 64-48 victory on their home court as Ava Ranson led the way for USD by scoring 10 points against Gonzaga.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS

  • Gonzaga enters play this weekend at the top of the conference standings with a 13-6 overall record and a 5-1 record in WCC play as their only conference loss came on the road against Santa Clara. 
  • The Bulldogs have been led by the stellar play of freshman forward Lauren Whittaker, who's averaging 19.9 PPG and 10 rebounds while shooting 58% from the field and just under 41% from three-point distance. 
  • As a team, Gonzaga has been one of the most efficient offensive teams in the league as they're second in the WCC in points per game and lead the conference in field goal percentage and three point percentage.
