LAST TIME OUT
  • Maquena O'Callaghan scored all three goals for San Diego on Senior Day, and the Toreros came from behind twice to beat Denver 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium for their first WCC win of the season.
  • The Toreros started all seven of their seniors against Denver in the programs' first meeting as conference opponents. O'Callaghan came into the day with one goal this season and left with a team-leading four. Fellow seniors Tamia Graham and Ruby Shoots helped set up the game-winner, and goalkeeper Ilise Medrano kept Denver scoreless in the second half.
  • Denver scored first, in the ninth minute, and San Diego pulled even in the 23rd. Hannah Faklaris sent the ball down the left flank to Ella Callanan, who carried it toward the end line and crossed to the middle. O'Callaghan settled it with a couple of touches and fired a right-footed shot into the right side of the net.
  • Down 2-1 at the break after a Denver penalty kick in the 31st minute, the Toreros won the second half 2-0 and put six shots on target to the Pioneers' three. O'Callaghan returned to the field in the 65th minute and tied the match from the penalty spot in the 72nd. Faklaris drew the foul in the box after a Callanan cross from the left, and O'Callaghan put her right-footed kick into the bottom right corner.
  • Graham's free kick from the left started the winning sequence in the 78th minute. Faklaris headed it on target, and Shoots followed from close range. The Denver goalkeeper stopped both before O'Callaghan tapped the rebound into an empty net.
  • All three of Medrano's second-half saves came after the go-ahead goal, the last in the 86th minute, and the senior finished with four saves.
  • O'Callaghan put all four of her shots on target in 61 minutes and is 2-for-2 on penalty kicks this season. Faklaris figured in all three goals, and Callanan had a hand in the first two.
  • San Diego's 10 shots on goal were a season high, and its three goals tied its season best from a 3-1 win at UC Irvine on Sept. 10.
THEY SAID IT
  • "We went behind twice, responded both times and then found a way to win it," head coach Greg LaPorte said. "At 1-0 and again at 2-1, it would have been easy to let frustration take over, especially given our recent results. But what impressed me most was the mentality of our entire team. Instead, we kept fighting, kept believing and found a way to get the job done. I couldn't be happier for Maquena and our seniors. What a performance from Maquena O'Callaghan on Senior Day. Three goals in a game of this magnitude is special. They've given so much to this program, and to see them rewarded with a comeback win like this is something they'll remember for a long time."

CHLOE WALLS NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (AUG. 17)
  • San Diego redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Walls was named the WCC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Aug. 17, 2026.
  • Walls turned aside four shots, including a 41st-minute penalty kick, to preserve a clean sheet against CSU Fullerton on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026.
  • The honor is Walls' second conference weekly award of her career, following her Defensive Player of the Week nod on Aug. 25, 2025 for her stellar career debut performances in net to start last season.
  • She is the first Torero to be recognized since Amanda Anders earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8, 2025.
AMANDA ANDERS NAMED TO WCC PRESEASON TEAM (AUG. 4)
  • San Diego forward Amanda Anders was named to the 2026 West Coast Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Team, the league announced on August 4. Anders was the lone Torero selected, and the first USD player picked to the preseason team since Milan Moses in 2019.
  • The recognition follows a freshman season in which Anders emerged as one of the WCC's most dangerous attacking threats. In 17 games, she scored six goals — the ninth-best mark in the conference — and added two assists for eight points.
  • Anders' debut was as memorable as any in recent program history. She came off the bench in her first collegiate match, a 3-3 draw with Cal Poly on August 14, and scored twice, including the tying goal with eight minutes left — becoming the first Torero freshman in 12 years to record a brace in her debut. It earned her the first of two WCC Offensive Player of the Week honors on the season, making her the first Torero ever to win the award since it split into offensive and defensive categories in 2019.
  • Anders earned her second Offensive Player of the Week honor three weeks later after another two-goal game off the bench in a 6-0 win over UC Riverside, vaulting her to the WCC's goal-scoring lead. She went on to score the game-winning goal in USD's 2-1 win at Portland and finished the year on the All-WCC Freshman Team.
  • The sport runs in the family — Anders' mother, Sherice (Bartling) Anders, starred at USD before playing professionally in the WUSA for the Boston Breakers, and was in the stands for her daughter's historic debut.
LAST YEAR: THE BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY

San Diego women's soccer head coach Greg LaPorte led the Toreros to the program's best start in program history in 2025. His second season at the helm in San Diego saw USD accomplish the following:
  • Go undefeated in non-conference play for the first time in program history
  • Start the season on an eight-match unbeaten streak
  • Remain unbeaten until September 26, 2025, making them one of the last teams without a loss in the nation.
  • Score 28 goals in 2025, which doubled the total from a year before and quadrupled the total from the season before LaPorte's takeover in 2023, which was also the program's most since 2019
  • 13 individual Toreros combined for 28 total assists in 2025, which marked the most in a single season for the program in at least seven years
