LAST TIME OUT
• Portland beat San Diego 5-4 in a downpour Oct. 10 at Torero Stadium, leaving the Toreros 6-3-3 overall and 1-1-2 in WCC play. The nine goals were the most in a San Diego match this season, and the Toreros' four were a season high.
•
Oliver Rhoades answered Portland's third-minute opener in the eighth, firing a rebound left-footed into the bottom right corner from 16 yards for his first goal of the season and his first since 2024.
• After the Pilots went back in front in the 12th minute,
Steven Ramirez made it 2-2 in the 51st, heading in from the near side after
Tobias Polz nodded a
Matteo Salcedo free kick back across the goal mouth. It was Ramirez's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
• Portland answered with two goals in 21 seconds, the first coming 42 seconds after Ramirez's equalizer, and converted a 64th- minute penalty kick for a 5-2 lead.
•
Kevin Pena came off the bench to score twice in 1:58 and pull San Diego within one with 17 minutes to play. He struck a right- footed free kick from 25 yards into the upper-left corner in the 71st minute, then looped an 18-yard shot over the goalkeeper in the 73rd after
Lucien Wa Bwanda and Rhoades combined on the right flank.
• They were Pena's first goals since his freshman season in 2022 and the first multi-goal match of his career.
• San Diego outshot Portland 17-14, including 12-7 after halftime, and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and 58% of possession. Portland put eight of its 14 shots on target, and
Lucca Adams made three saves.
•
Iain Wagner led the Toreros with four shots, and Pena put two of his three on target.
• San Diego played without captain
Mathias Bauer, who is out with an injury, and wing-back
Luca Fava, who had started each of the first 11 matches.
Conner Gardenhour made his first start of the season, and 16 Toreros saw action.
•
Taj Eagleston came off in the 69th minute, his first time off the pitch this season after playing every minute of the first 11 matches.
• The result evened the all-time series at 23-23-8 and gave Portland its fourth straight win over San Diego. It also ended the Toreros' 13-match regular-season unbeaten run at Torero Stadium (11-0-2), which began after the Pilots' previous visit in November 2024.
THE SERIES WITH PACIFIC
• Saturday is the 13th all-time meeting between San Diego and Pacific. The Toreros lead the series 8-4-0 and have outscored the Tigers 21-13.
• San Diego has won the last four meetings without conceding, outscoring Pacific 8-0: 2-0 in Stockton on Nov. 4, 2022, 4-0 at Torero Stadium on Nov. 4, 2023, 1-0 in Stockton on Nov. 2, 2024, and 1-0 at Torero Stadium on Oct. 31, 2025.
• Pacific's last win in the series was a 2-1 decision at Torero Stadium on Nov. 5, 2021, and its last home win over San Diego came Nov. 2, 2019, 4-2. The Toreros have won all three of their trips to Stockton since: 2-1 on Feb. 28, 2021, 2-0 in 2022 and 1-0 in 2024.
• In the most recent meeting,
Iain Wagner's low right-footed strike from just outside the box in the 51st minute, off an
Owen Walz assist, gave No. 10 San Diego a 1-0 win on Halloween night. The Toreros outshot Pacific 20-7 and 9-1 on target, and
Lucca Adams needed one save for his seventh clean sheet of the season.
•
Steven Ramirez scored the only goal of the last meeting in Stockton on Nov. 2, 2024, a second-half header off assists from Luca Fava and
Ethan Warne, as No. 4 San Diego outshot the Tigers 17-2.
CHASING A FIFTH STRAIGHT TITLE
• The loss to Portland left San Diego 1-1-2 in WCC play with five points and four league matches left: at Pacific on Saturday, against Santa Clara (Oct. 21), at Seattle U (Oct. 31) and against Saint Mary's (Nov. 6).
• Portland (3-0-0) leads with nine points. Denver and Pacific (2-0-1) are next with seven, and San Diego, Seattle U and Santa Clara have five apiece.
• The 2025 Toreros lost to Portland in their third WCC match, falling to 1-1-1, and then won their last six league matches to claim the title.
• All four of San Diego's WCC losses since the start of the 2022 season have come against Portland. The Toreros are 25-0-5 against the rest of the conference over that span.
• USD went 25-3-3 in WCC regular-season play across its four title seasons: 6-0-1 in 2022, 5-1-1 in 2023, 7-1-0 in 2024 and 7-1-1 in 2025. The 2025 crown made San Diego the first program in league history to win four straight.
• The 2026 WCC men's soccer field has nine teams, with Denver joining this season, and each plays an eight-match league schedule.
• For the first time, the WCC will stage a men's soccer tournament. The top four regular-season finishers meet in single-elimination semifinals on Nov. 11 and a final on Nov. 14, with the higher seed hosting each match.
• The tournament champion, not the regular-season champion, now earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

COMING FROM BEHIND

• Half of the Toreros' six wins have come after conceding the first goal: against Liberty on Aug. 23, at UC Irvine on Sept. 8 and at LMU on Sept. 30.
• The three losses after conceding first were 1-0 road defeats at No. 1 Stanford, on an 89th-minute goal, and at Kansas City, where the Toreros played the final 54 minutes with 10 men, and the 5-4 home loss to Portland.
• Even down 5-2 against Portland, San Diego scored twice in 1:58 through
Kevin Pena to make it 5-4 with 17 minutes to play.
• The answer at LMU took 68 seconds. The Lions scored at 21:45, and
Steven Ramirez equalized at 22:53.
• San Diego trailed 1-0 at halftime against Liberty and at UC Irvine. The Toreros scored three times between the 54th and 64th minutes to beat the Flames 3-1, then scored twice in a span of 2:21 to beat the Anteaters 2-1.
• Six of the seven goals in the three comeback wins have come after halftime. Ramirez has three of the seven and
Taj Eagleston two, both of them game-winners.

Luca Fava's winner at California Baptist came 45 seconds after the Lancers went down to 10 men.

• San Diego is No. 35 in the NCAA RPI through games of Oct. 15, the highest of the nine WCC teams. Portland is next at No. 41.
• The Toreros fell out of the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 this week after appearing in each of the first eight coaches polls of the season.
• San Diego is also unranked in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 released Oct. 12, a week after sitting at No. 18.
• USD opened the season at No. 18 in the coaches poll and climbed to No. 2 on Aug. 25, the highest the program has ever appeared in that poll.
• The Toreros reached No. 1 in the Top Drawer Soccer Division I Top 25 on Aug. 24, the first time the program has held the top spot in a national poll.
• San Diego's previous best in either poll was No. 3, reached in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 on Nov. 5, 2024, at 12-1-2.
• Four 2026 opponents are in this week's coaches poll: No. 10 UCLA, which hosts the Toreros on Oct. 25, No. 11 Kansas City, No. 13 Washington and No. 25 Stanford. San Diego beat Washington 2-1 in the opener and lost 1-0 at Kansas City and Stanford.
COACH QUINN AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
• Since taking over in 2018, head coach
Brian Quinn has faced ranked opponents 24 times and is 8-11-5 in those matches.
• No. 1 Washington remains both the highest-ranked opponent of the Quinn era and his highest-ranked win, ahead of a 2018 meeting with No. 2 Duke that the Toreros dropped.
• That list of wins also includes No. 6 Washington in 2023, No. 7 Portland in 2022, No. 10 Duke in 2024 and No. 10 Oregon State in 2025.
• Stanford was the 12th top-10 opponent of the Quinn era and the fourth top-three opponent since 2018.
• San Diego has already faced the nation's No. 1 team twice this season.
• Kansas City, No. 16 at kickoff on Sept. 20, was Quinn's 24th ranked opponent and the third of 2026. San Diego is 1-2-0 against ranked teams this season, with both losses by a 1-0 score.
BEATING A NO. 1

Brian Quinn. The Huskies were the defending national champions.
• The previous one came Sept. 26, 2014, a 1-0 win over No. 1 UCLA at Torero Stadium in front of a program-record crowd of 4,432.
•
Taj Eagleston opened the scoring in the 11th minute in Seattle, finishing an assist from
Steven Ramirez whose own strike had been cleared off the goal line.
Devin Dillon doubled the lead in the 53rd.

Lucca Adams went the full 90 and made four saves against 16 Washington shots and 11 corner kicks. The result moved San Diego to 3-3-2 all time against the Huskies.
EAGLESTON, FAVA SWEEP WCC MEN'S SOCCER WEEKLY AWARDS (SEPT. 14)
•
