LAST TIME OUT
  • Senior goalkeeper Ilise Medrano stopped a penalty kick on her way to a career-high 11 saves Saturday afternoon in San Diego's 1-0 loss at Saint Mary's.
  • The Toreros held Saint Mary's scoreless until the 70th minute, and Medrano turned away the Gaels' first nine shots on target. Her 11 saves were the most by a Torero this season and three more than her previous career high. The senior's first career start also came against Saint Mary's, nearly three years ago to the day.
  • Three of her saves came between the 13th and 17th minutes. Amanda Anders and Tamia Graham tested the Saint Mary's defense with back-to-back shots in the 18th minute, and San Diego earned its first corner moments later. Medrano added saves in the 24th and 27th minutes to keep it scoreless at the break.
  • With the match still 0-0, Saint Mary's went to the penalty spot in the 52nd minute. Medrano saved it, starting a run of four saves, two of them nine seconds apart.
  • The Gaels broke through in the 70th minute for the only goal of the afternoon. Medrano kept San Diego within one with saves in the 79th and 80th minutes. Maquena O'Callaghan then forced a save with a low shot in the 85th, and the Toreros won a corner in the 88th as they pushed for an equalizer. The Toreros also blocked six Saint Mary's shots.
THEY SAID IT
  • "Thought we had a solid game plan coming in," head coach Greg LaPorte said, "and defensively we did a lot of things well against a very good Saint Mary's team. Ilise came up with a huge penalty kick save to keep us in the game. Ultimately, we just weren't clean enough in possession. We gave the ball away too easily and too often, which made it difficult to build any attacking rhythm. In a game with such small margins, you have to take better care of the ball, and today we didn't. It's frustrating because I felt this was a game where we could have gotten a result."
ALL-TIME SERIES WITH PORTLAND
  • The Toreros all-time record with the Pilots is 9-23-2, with their last meeting being on Oct. 8, 2025 where San Diego took a 2-1 decision at Merlo Field in Portland, OR.
  • The first time these two programs met, Portland won the match at San Diego on Oct. 24, 1992.
  • Las Toreras look to extend their one-game win streak in the series with the Pilots on Saturday, Oct 24.

CHLOE WALLS NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (AUG. 17)
  • San Diego redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Walls was named the WCC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Aug. 17, 2026.
  • Walls turned aside four shots, including a 41st-minute penalty kick, to preserve a clean sheet against CSU Fullerton on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026.
  • The honor is Walls' second conference weekly award of her career, following her Defensive Player of the Week nod on Aug. 25, 2025 for her stellar career debut performances in net to start last season.
  • She is the first Torero to be recognized since Amanda Anders earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8, 2025.
AMANDA ANDERS NAMED TO WCC PRESEASON TEAM (AUG. 4)
  • San Diego forward Amanda Anders was named to the 2026 West Coast Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Team, the league announced on August 4. Anders was the lone Torero selected, and the first USD player picked to the preseason team since Milan Moses in 2019.
  • The recognition follows a freshman season in which Anders emerged as one of the WCC's most dangerous attacking threats. In 17 games, she scored six goals — the ninth-best mark in the conference — and added two assists for eight points.
  • Anders' debut was as memorable as any in recent program history. She came off the bench in her first collegiate match, a 3-3 draw with Cal Poly on August 14, and scored twice, including the tying goal with eight minutes left — becoming the first Torero freshman in 12 years to record a brace in her debut. It earned her the first of two WCC Offensive Player of the Week honors on the season, making her the first Torero ever to win the award since it split into offensive and defensive categories in 2019.
  • Anders earned her second Offensive Player of the Week honor three weeks later after another two-goal game off the bench in a 6-0 win over UC Riverside, vaulting her to the WCC's goal-scoring lead. She went on to score the game-winning goal in USD's 2-1 win at Portland and finished the year on the All-WCC Freshman Team.
  • The sport runs in the family — Anders' mother, Sherice (Bartling) Anders, starred at USD before playing professionally in the WUSA for the Boston Breakers, and was in the stands for her daughter's historic debut.
LAST YEAR: THE BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY

San Diego women's soccer head coach Greg LaPorte led the Toreros to the program's best start in program history in 2025. His second season at the helm in San Diego saw USD accomplish the following:
  • Go undefeated in non-conference play for the first time in program history
  • Start the season on an eight-match unbeaten streak
  • Remain unbeaten until September 26, 2025, making them one of the last teams without a loss in the nation.
  • Score 28 goals in 2025, which doubled the total from a year before and quadrupled the total from the season before LaPorte's takeover in 2023, which was also the program's most since 2019
  • 13 individual Toreros combined for 28 total assists in 2025, which marked the most in a single season for the program in at least seven years
