LAST TIME OUT
  • Veronica Osejo had been on the field for 16 seconds when she scored the first goal of her college career, and it sent San Diego women's soccer to a 2-1 West Coast Conference win over Portland on Saturday night at Torero Stadium.
  • Ella Callanan scored the opener, and goalkeeper Ilise Medrano made five saves as the Toreros beat Portland in their second-to-last home conference match of the season.
  • San Diego outshot Portland 10-6 in the first half and put five of those shots on target. Callanan and Abby Haley each forced a save, and Kate Sealy put two shots on frame eight seconds apart in the 37th minute. Amanda Anders tested the keeper again less than a minute later.
  • Off a throw-in on the right side in the 64th minute, Kaylee Smith sent a cross into the middle that bounced off a defender. Callanan met it with her right foot and drove it into the upper-left corner from 12 yards for her second goal of the season. She finished with a team-high four shots.
  • The equalizer came in the 77th minute, and Osejo checked in for the restart. Sixteen seconds later, freshman Jonnie Quiroz pounced on a clearance in the middle of the field, took two touches forward and slipped a through ball ahead for her fellow freshman. Osejo fired on her first touch, a right-footed shot from 8 yards and put San Diego back in front for good.
  • Medrano and the back line protected the lead the rest of the way. Portland managed two shots after the go-ahead goal, and Medrano turned away the only one on target in the 84th minute for her fifth save. Las Toreras scored on both of their second-half shots on target and finished with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
THEY SAID IT
  • "This was massive," head coach Greg LaPorte said. "It was one of two home games we have left. ... Mathematically, we are still in the hunt. I told the group it's going to take all our tools, all our intention, be clean technically, work for each other, run for each other and urgency any time we get an opportunity."
  • When asked about both Ella Callanan and Veronica Osejo's goals, LaPorte said, "It was pretty special. Ella's from Portland so that goal was pretty massive to kick it off for us and give us that boost of energy and confidence. But Portland, you know, we poked the bear. They came right after us and equalized, but I was proud of our group for their continuous fight. [Veronica] puts it all on the line out there on the field and gives it everything she's got. That was special for her first career goal and the team felt it and [they] let her feel how happy and proud they were of her after the game."

CHLOE WALLS NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (AUG. 17)

  • Walls turned aside four shots, including a 41st-minute penalty kick, to preserve a clean sheet against CSU Fullerton on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026.
  • The honor is Walls' second conference weekly award of her career, following her Defensive Player of the Week nod on Aug. 25, 2025 for her stellar career debut performances in net to start last season.
  • She is the first Torero to be recognized since Amanda Anders earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8, 2025.
AMANDA ANDERS NAMED TO WCC PRESEASON TEAM (AUG. 4)
  • San Diego forward Amanda Anders was named to the 2026 West Coast Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Team, the league announced on August 4. Anders was the lone Torero selected, and the first USD player picked to the preseason team since Milan Moses in 2019.
  • The recognition follows a freshman season in which Anders emerged as one of the WCC's most dangerous attacking threats. In 17 games, she scored six goals — the ninth-best mark in the conference — and added two assists for eight points.
  • Anders' debut was as memorable as any in recent program history. She came off the bench in her first collegiate match, a 3-3 draw with Cal Poly on August 14, and scored twice, including the tying goal with eight minutes left — becoming the first Torero freshman in 12 years to record a brace in her debut. It earned her the first of two WCC Offensive Player of the Week honors on the season, making her the first Torero ever to win the award since it split into offensive and defensive categories in 2019.
  • Anders earned her second Offensive Player of the Week honor three weeks later after another two-goal game off the bench in a 6-0 win over UC Riverside, vaulting her to the WCC's goal-scoring lead. She went on to score the game-winning goal in USD's 2-1 win at Portland and finished the year on the All-WCC Freshman Team.
  • The sport runs in the family — Anders' mother, Sherice (Bartling) Anders, starred at USD before playing professionally in the WUSA for the Boston Breakers, and was in the stands for her daughter's historic debut.
LAST YEAR: THE BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY

San Diego women's soccer head coach Greg LaPorte led the Toreros to the program's best start in program history in 2025. His second season at the helm in San Diego saw USD accomplish the following:
  • Go undefeated in non-conference play for the first time in program history
  • Start the season on an eight-match unbeaten streak
  • Remain unbeaten until September 26, 2025, making them one of the last teams without a loss in the nation.
  • Score 28 goals in 2025, which doubled the total from a year before and quadrupled the total from the season before LaPorte's takeover in 2023, which was also the program's most since 2019
  • 13 individual Toreros combined for 28 total assists in 2025, which marked the most in a single season for the program in at least seven years
