USD Crushes Creighton in 15-5 Run-Rule Win at Fowler Park

Bade and Sebek shine on the mound as Toreros pound out 13 hits to earn fourth consecutive victory

SAN DIEGO — Over the last two games, San Diego Baseball struggled to get its offense going early but found ways to come back late and win. It took seven innings Tuesday at Long Beach State and four innings yesterday in the home opener against Utah.

However, that all changed Saturday night at Fowler Park when the Toreros jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two frames, en route to a 15-5 win over the Creighton Bluejays during the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament for USD's fourth straight victory.

After Creighton scored five times in the fifth to cut San Diego's lead to 8-5, the Toreros' offense punched back with three in the bottom half and four in the sixth before Caleb Sebek closed the door in the seventh, forcing the 10-run mercy rule.

The three-run fifth was highlighted by an extra base hit from Aden Howard, an RBI triple, before a couple of RBIs on hit by pitches from Tanner Kern and Andrew Gauna

In the Toreros' (5-1, 0-0 West Coast Conference) final offensive frame, they got a couple more run-scoring extra base hits. CJ Moran plated Gage Mestas and Diego Gonzalez on a two-run double to center before Gabe Springer logged the team's second triple of the evening, scoring Moran.

Sebek threw two shutout frames in the sixth and the seventh, while working around two walks and a hit by pitch with a strikeout against the Bluejays (2-3, 0-0 Big East Conference).

Kyle Bade got the start for the Toreros. He allowed four hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks, while striking out eight. Nearly all of Bade's trouble came in the fifth as he only allowed one hit through the first four innings, including retiring the Bluejays in order in the first, second and fourth innings.

Jayden Lobliner's power was once again on display, this time turning on a pitch running in for a two-run home run, scoring Gabe Springer in the opening frame, marking Lobliner's third consecutive game with a blast.

Then, San Diego busted the gates open in the second, scoring five times, highlighted by Moran and Kern both logging two RBI singles.

USD then took an 8-0 lead over the Bluejays in the fourth on an RBI single from Gauna.

San Diego wraps up its weekend Sunday when it takes on its crosstown foe, San Diego State, in a battle between the Tony Gwynn Legacy co-hosts. First pitch between the Toreros and the Aztecs is slated for 4 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Mountain West Network with David Gentile on the call, while Braden Surprenant will have play-by-play duties on USDToreros.com (audio only).
