Toreros Demolish Aztecs to Earn Fifth Straight Win

San Diego's bats stay hot, complement strong start from Drake Frize to seal 15-4 victory at Tony Gwynn Stadium

SAN DIEGO – USD Baseball sophomore CJ Moran said Saturday following the team's big win against Utah that the Toreros are "trying to be the best team in San Diego" with its next two matchups against teams from America's Finest City.

After going 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI against the Utes, the sophomore continued his offensive success, going 3-for-5 in San Diego's 15-4 win at San Diego State Sunday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

Moran, who scored four times and logged four RBI against his former school, was part of an offense that was once again on display early, scoring 11 unanswered runs over the first three innings in the finale of the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament.

The Torero left fielder, hitting in the No. 2 spot for head coach Brock Ungricht, scored in each of the first three innings and added his his fourth run of the day on the three-run blast in the sixth to put the finishing touches to San Diego winning all three of its games in the event honoring the late baseball legend and closing the weekend on a five-game winning streak.

Like yesterday against the Utes, the runs from San Diego (6-1, 0-0 West Coast Conference) came in bunches. After scoring a three-fun fifth and the four-run sixth Saturday, the Toreros continued that offense right from the start against the Aztecs (4-3, 0-0 Mountain West Conference) with three in the first, two in the second and six in the third to take an 11-0 lead after the Toreros' at-bats in the third inning.

Moran then put the finishing touches to a three-run sixth inning, courtesy of his first home run in a Toreros uniform.

As San Diego posted 15 runs for the second straight game, the Toreros had nine hits as a result of recording 10 base on balls, four hit by pitches and eight stolen bases.

Tanner Kern was one benefactor to the team's production without putting the ball in play. The freshman infielder went 0-for-1 with two walks, two hit by pitches and a sacrifice hit. He turned that into a run scored and two RBI, including in the first inning when he took one for the team, scoring Aden Howard

Andrew Gauna then capped off the opening frame with a two-run single to the opposite field, scoring Moran and Gabe Springer

Moran produced again in the second, logging an RBI single, scoring Diego Gonzalez before coming around to score on an RBI double down the left field line by Springer.

USD broke the door open in the third scoring with six runs, despite only getting one hit. Jayton Greer scored on a dropped third strike that got away from the SDSU catcher. Then Springer, Jayden Lobliner and Kern each logged an RBI on consecutive plate appearances, with a hit by pitch, a walk and a sacrifice fly, respectively.

Then after Springer and Lobliner moved up 90 feet on a double steal, Gauna brought both of them home on a two RBI infield single.

As USD jumped out to a big lead, it gave the needed support for Drake Frize, who made his second start of the season. The graduate student went five innings and allowed three runs while scattering five hits and striking out three with no walks.

Like Kyle Bade the day before, it was one inning that got away a bit from Frize, but was able to work out of it.

For Frize, that was the third inning, when he allowed three runs, including a hit by pitch, but escaped after getting an inning-ending ground ball to Gonzalez.

The graduate student, who earned the win, worked around a base hit in three of his first four innings before retiring the side in order in the fifth.

Hayden Cody and Aidan Gonzalez took the sixth and seventh innings and completed them with ease before Jagger Edwards recorded the final six outs to seal a near-perfect weekend for USD.

Up next, the Toreros will travel to another school in America's Finest City, UC San Diego Tuesday at Triton Ballpark beginning at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Braden Suprenant will also have the call on USDToreros.com.

NOTABLE
  • The Toreros were a menace on the bases, registering 10 walks and eight stolen bases.
  • The 10 base on balls are the most since San Diego had 11 last season against Columbia (March 16, 2025)
  • The eight stolen bases are also the most in a game since USD also reached that feat against Minnesota (February 16, 2022)
  • CJ Moran logged his second straight multi-hit game, with three hits against the Aztecs.
  • Moran also recorded his first home run in a Toreros uniform as well as his second straight game with four RBI
  • Andrew Gauna, a local product who attended nearby Patrick Henry High School and Mesa College, also registered a three-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
  • Gauna has recorded at least one his in five of the last six games
  • Drake Frize, who went 5.0 innings and allowed three runs without allowing a walk, recorded his first win in a Toreros uniform since April 2, 2024.
  • Aidan Gonzalez, who made his season debut, threw a clean seventh inning while working around a walk and a hit.
  • Jagger Edwards, who is a graduate transfer from Columbia University, worked the final two innings against the Aztecs, allowing two hits and a run with a walk and two strikeouts.
