Toreros Drop Game Two Versus Michigan at Fowler Park

San Diego falls in 9-0 decision on Saturday night

SAN DIEGO — For the second consecutive night, San Diego Baseball faced a 5-0 deficit against Michigan.

However, despite another crowd of more than 1,000 at Fowler Park and Cunningham Field on Saturday evening, the Toreros couldn't author another comeback, falling 9-0 to the Wolverines.

USD (7-3, 0-0 West Coast Conference) was unable to put together any run-scoring opportunities as Michigan (5-4, 0-0 Big Ten) scored its runs in bunches.

San Diego did have opportunities. In the third, trailing by two and after Gage Mestas was hit by a pitch with one out, he was caught trying to steal second base. That was followed by a Cade Martinez single and an Aden Howard walk before the inning concluded.

Then, Howard opened the sixth inning with a base hit up the middle before also getting hung up at second base. Like the third, two runners got on after the caught stealing with Gabe Springer walking and Jayden Lobliner recording a base hit up the middle.

Kyle Bade threw the first 4.2 innings for the Toreros, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned), one walk, while striking out two.

Fernando Palencia then came in to relieve Bade. Despite allowing a bases-clearing double in the fifth where two runs were credited to Bade, Palencia settled in for a couple of scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh innings.

After Caleb Sebek came in, Christian Garcia worked a scoreless ninth inning in his second collegiate pitching appearance.

NOTABLE
  • Freshman Phoenix Brant, who attended nearby Point Loma High School and played a high school championship game at Fowler Park last May, logged his first collegiate hit in the ninth inning.
  • Palencia threw 2.2 innings and logged a new career-high with five strikeouts in a single appearance.
  • With two hits tonight, Howard has begun his 2026 season with a 10-game hitting streak and a .326 (14-for-43) batting average. Dating back to San Diego's final two games last season in the West Coast Conference Tournament, it is also a 12-game streak.
  • Jayden Lobliner also collected two hits. He has at least one hit in seven of his last eight games and already has five multi-hit performances in 2026.
