San Diego Baseball Falls to Michigan in Series Finale

Toreros bring tying run to the plate in the eighth but can’t score in 9-2 loss on Sunday afternoon

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Baseball was unable to win the rubber game of its three-game series Sunday at Fowler Park, falling 9-2 to Michigan.

Trailing 6-2 in the eighth inning, the Toreros took advantage of three walks to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. However, San Diego did not get that key hit.

Although USD (7-4, 0-0 West Coast Conference) scored a run each in the third and fourth innings, the Wolverines scored four in the third and two more in the fourth before scoring their final three runs in the ninth inning.

San Diego got its first run of the day on a double off the top of the left center field wall by the 370 foot marker from Connor Meidroth, scoring Tanner Kern.

The Toreros tacked on another run on an RBI single from Andrew Gauna back up the middle, scoring Gabe Springer in the fourth.

Gauna also showed off the glove for an inning-ending diving catch in the sixth to prevent two Wolverines (6-4, 0-0 Big Ten Conference) from scoring.

Drake Frize made his first home start of the season and third overall Sunday. The graduate student went two-plus innings, allowing five hits, three runs, three walks, while getting three strikeouts.

The quartet of Nate DeSchryver, Porter Rovin, Hayden Cody and Chaz McRoberts worked the final seven innings, highlighted by shutout work from DeSchryver and Cody.

NOTABLE
  • 1,056 people made their way inside Fowler Park Sunday, marking four-digit attendance numbers for all three games this weekend against the Wolverines. The last time USD had at least 1,000 patrons enter Fowler Park for all three games of a non-conference series was when the Toreros hosted Nebraska for Opening Weekend in 2023.
  • Meidroth, who got the start at second base, recorded an RBI double in the third. He has registered at least one hit in all four games he has appeared in this season.
  • With his sixth-inning walk, Aden Howard extended his on-base streak to 11 games this season. He has also recorded 21 straight games with a hit, a walk, or hit by pitch dating back to May 11, 2025 at Santa Clara.
  • Cody worked three scoreless innings while tying a season-high four strikeouts. It's his most since Opening Night at Charlotte (February 13).
  • His three innings pitched are also the most he has worked since went 4.1 in USD's West Coast conference tournament game against LMU (CA) (March 23).
  • CJ Moran, who has primarily played left field since the final game of the three-game series against Charlotte (February 15), logged an outfield assist and four putouts, having to get a couple outs going back on hard-hit line drives. He also saved a home run by leaping up to keep a would-be home run ball in play in the third inning.
UP NEXT
The Toreros will head on the road for the next five games, beginning with a four-game weekend series at UC Berkeley. San Diego plays Friday at 6 p.m. before a doubleheader Saturday with game times at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The series at UC Berkeley wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m. All four games between the Toreros and the Golden Bears will be streamed live on the ACC Network.

San Diego will also travel to USC on March 11 before its next home series against Oregon State March 13-15 at Fowler Park.
