SAN DIEGO — San Diego women's tennis hosted crosstown rivals San Diego State in a top-25, nationally-ranked match up as the Toreros were edged 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Hogan Tennis Center.
In San Diego's fourth straight matchup against a ranked opponent, USD recently jumped on top of SDSU in the ITA rankings going from No. 30 to No. 19 in the update earlier in the week.
On court three, freshmen Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Maria Shmakova played together for the first time this season as they won 6-1 to start off doubles play. After taking the first game and dropping the second, the duo exploded to win the remaining games to finish the match 6-1.
The rest of the hour-long doubles point was competitive as well, as Kristina Nordikyan paired up with freshman Ines Leon for the second time this season to face off against the nationally-ranked No. 38 doubles pairing for the Aztecs. SDSU would claim narrow 6-4 and 7-5 victories on courts one and two to take the doubles point.
In singles play, the Torero freshmen continued their hot days on courts two and five as San Diego took its first dual lead of the day behind wins from Shmakova and Krebs Hyllested. Shmakova thrived at the start of her match as she won seven straight games with a bagel in the first set, winning 6-0, 6-1 to tie the match up for USD. Krebs Hyllested, playing at No. 2 for the first time in her career, gave the Toreros the lead as she followed in pursuit with a pair of 6-1 sets to win her match, clinching with a break.
SDSU responded, regaining the lead 3-2, with responses on courts one and four. Leon lost in two sets but battled to a 5-7 finish in the second set, as Keitel dueled it out to three sets on main court but lost in alternating sets in a 2-6, 6-2, 2-6 match.
ITA No. 112 and USD sophomore Hannah Read persevered with back-to-back 7-5 sets to win her match and tie it all up at 3-3.
All attention went to the final match on the last court, where Gabby Gregg had competed well in the first set, winning 6-4 before dropping the second one. In her last set, she faced three match points before coming back to tie the third set up at five games apiece. Ultimately, Gregg couldn't complete the full comeback, dropping the duals deciding set 7-5, as SDSU won the match 4-3.
