TEMPE, Ariz. – San Diego women's tennis dropped a road dual at Arizona State on Saturday by a final score of 6-1.
The battle began with back-and-forth doubles matches that took an hour, setting the table for what seemed like would be a close, lengthy match between the two sides. After a quick ASU win on court one, courts two and three were knotted at five, but the Sundevils ultimately claimed the doubles point with a 7-5 victory on court three.
The hosts rode that momentum into singles play, taking five singles matches in straight sets. On main court, ITA No. 94 Torero
Hannah Read battled in a back-and-forth first set with the nation's 16
th-ranked player, but ran out of gas and was bested 6-4, 6-0.
The lone Torero to win on the day was freshman
Maria Shmakova, who on court five posted a calm 6-2, 6-3 win, improving to 4-1 in her collegiate rookie campaign.
