Sebek Shines, Three Toreros Homer in Tough Loss to Titans

San Diego scores six runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings but can't overcome a late surge from CSUF

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball fell by an 11-6 margin for a second straight game to cap off a seven-game homestand Tuesday against Cal State Fullerton at Fowler Park.

Despite trailing 7-0 and not having a hit through 4.1 innings, the Toreros (8-15, 1-2 WCC) fought back in energetic fashion, scoring six unanswered runs across the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to climb back within one.

But the Titans (11-13, 5-4 Big West) answered by scoring three times in the eighth and added one last insurance run in the ninth to extend their lead and eventually secure the win.

With one out in the fifth inning, Cade Martinez recorded USD's first hit of the evening, scoring Nico Button, who got on via a Titans error and took second on a ball in the dirt.

Then Gabe Springer turned an 11-pitch at-bat into an RBI infield single, plating Martinez before Jayden Lobliner lined a double down the left field line, scoring Tanner Kern

In the sixth, Diego Gonzalez launched his first collegiate home run off the Manchester Village dorms beyond Fowler Park's right field wall. And in the following frame, Gabe Springer and CJ Moran went back-to-back with solo home runs to cut Fullerton's lead down to one.

As the San Diego offense got rolling, Caleb Sebek threw 2.2 scoreless frames in a bullpen game for head coach Brock Ungricht to keep the Toreros within striking distance.

Before Sebek dominated, Kyle Bade threw the first two innings before Christian Garcia and Aídan Gonzalez got the next seven outs.

After Sebek recorded his third scoreless appearance of the season, Nate DeSchryver and Jagger Edwards worked the final two innings.

CSUF was led by Ty Thomas and Cam Burdick, who both went 3-for-5.

NOTABLE
  • Springer, who went 2-for-3, recorded his fourth home run of the season on a ball that went just inside the right field foul pole in the seventh inning.
  • The senior also registered his 17th hit by a pitch in the third inning, which is now tied for the second-most hit by pitches in a single season in program history. (Also: AJ Beltre and Rex Watson, 2025; Tony Perez, 2003). Ripken Reyes was hit 27 times in 2019, setting the program record.
  • After recording his first college extra-base hit on Saturday, Gonzalez registered his first career home run in the sixth inning with a towering drive that landed four stories up on the front of the Manchester Village dorms.
  • Moran logged his third longball of the season, marking the second time this year that San Diego has gone back-to-back and the first time since Lobliner and Aden Howard did so against Utah (February 21).
  • Fellow freshman Caleb Sebek threw a career-high 2.2 innings of shutout work. His last scoreless appearance came against Creighton (February 21), when he also recorded at least two innings while surrendering no runs.
  • Lobliner recorded his eighth double of the season, tying Springer for the team lead in two-baggers.
