Toreros Fall to No. 20 Grand Canyon in USD/SDSU Co-Host Tournament

San Diego battles undefeated Antelopes before falling 5-2 at Reggie Smith Softball Complex

SAN DIEGO — In its second game of the USD/SDSU Co-Host Tournament, San Diego softball (10-11, 0-0 WCC) put up a strong fight against one of the nation's best before ultimately falling to #20/23 Grand Canyon (25-0, 0-0 MWC) by a 5-2 margin on Friday evening at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

The Antelopes entered the contest at 24-0 and ranked among the top 25 programs in the country, and they looked every bit the part — but not without a challenge from the Toreros, who took the lead in the fifth inning before Grand Canyon rallied for four runs in the sixth to pull away.

San Diego collected nine hits on the evening and showed real offensive life against the undefeated Antelopes. Mallory Axline was the offensive catalyst, going 2-for-4 and driving in both of the Toreros' runs, while Michelle Delgado added two hits and scored a run, Taylor Johnson went 2-for-3, and Abrielle Diaz also chipped in two hits. USD tied the game with a run in the fourth before taking a 2-1 lead in the fifth — but Grand Canyon responded with four unanswered runs in the sixth to take control for good.

Kaitlyn Bartlow took the loss but that was far from the story — the junior right-hander gutted out a complete game, throwing all seven innings and striking out four while keeping USD in the game deep into the contest. Grand Canyon tallied 10 hits against her, with Bartlow surrendering seven walks on the evening, but she bent without breaking until the decisive sixth-inning rally.
Grand Canyon improved to 25-0 on the season with the victory, with Maggie Place earning the win in relief after tossing 2.1 scoreless innings.

The Toreros will look to regroup by taking on Princeton tomorrow at 12:30 PM at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.
