San Diego Drops Series Finale in Berkeley

Toreros strike first and keep it close on Sunday, but can't overcome late rally from Golden Bears

BERKELEY, Calif. — San Diego baseball is currently in a tough stretch, playing 11 straight games against schools from Power 4 conferences. On Sunday, the challenging stint continued as the Toreros wrapped up their series at California.

Despite being tied at two halfway through, USD was unable to mount a rally, losing 5-2 at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Trailing by three in the top of the eighth, San Diego (7-8, 0-0 WCC) brought the tying run to the plate but couldn't come up with a clutch hit.

The Golden Bears (13-3, 0-0 ACC) broke the 2-2 tie with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Drake Frize got the start for the Toreros and delivered one his best outings since returning from Tommy John surgery. After throwing just two innings in his last start, the redshirt senior pitched into the fifth on Sunday afternoon, allowing just two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.

After Frize allowed a two-out single in the fifth, Nate Deschryver came in and was able to end the inning on a strikeout.

Coming in after DeSchryver was Hayden Cody, who allowed one run on four hits while striking out four in two innings of work in the seventh and the eighth.

Despite loading the bases in the seventh, Cody got out of the jam and limited the damage to just one run before bouncing back with back-to-back strikeouts to begin the eighth.

Just like in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, San Diego scored first. On the second batter of the game, Gabe Springer launched his second home run of the weekend over the left field wall.

Then in the fourth, after Aden Howard recorded a one-out base hit up the middle and CJ Moran went first to third on the play, it set up a bit of San Diego Baseball.

Howard took off for second and while he successfully completed the steal, Moran dashed home on the back side to tie the game at two.

NOTABLE
  • San Diego's weekend series at California marked the first series between the two schools in eight years (February 16-17, 2018 at Fowler Park). This weekend was also the first time USD made the trip to Stu Gordon Stadium, dating back to 2004.
  • Gabe Springer, who went 1-for-4 batting in the No. 2 spot in the lineup, launched his second home run of the weekend and his third blast of 2026. The Stanford transfer hit .400 (6-for-15) in the four-game series against the Golden Bears.
  • Including Springer, each of San Diego's top three hitters in the lineup recorded a hit. That includes Jayden Lobliner, who went 1-for-4 and hit .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles and triple during the series.
  • Frize, who is coming off Tommy John surgery and did not pitch in all of 2025, went 4.2 innings in his fourth start back while striking out a season-best four batters. It is also the third time this season he has thrown at least four innings.
UP NEXT
San Diego will remain on the road this week to face USC, which is currently undefeated, on Wednesday before hosting Oregon State for a three-game series next weekend at Fowler Park. First pitch between the Toreros and the Trojans is slated for 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. The game will be televised on BIG+.
