San Diego Can't Close Out Rainy Finale at San Francisco

Quality start from Palencia, three hits from Moran highlight Toreros' efforts in 6-1 loss on Sunday

SAN FRANCISCO — San Diego baseball was unable to clinch the series in the finale at San Francisco, falling 6-1 to the Dons at Benedetti Diamond on Sunday.

Despite San Diego (13-20, 6-6 WCC) taking yet another early lead, the Dons (18-15, 9-3 WCC) punched back.

The Toreros got on the board in the first inning when reigning WCC Player of the Week Andrew Gauna singled up the middle, scoring CJ Moran, who opened the game on an infield single and advanced to second on a groundout before touching home.

Moran led the Toreros with a 3-for-4 performance in the series finale, highlighted by a double in the fifth to cap off hits in each of his first three at-bats.

However, USD was unable to muster any more offense and San Francisco scored once in the third and fourth innings before tacking on two each in the sixth and the eighth frames.

Fernando Palencia made his fifth start of the season and went five innings. He allowed five hits and two runs with no walks while striking out five.

Kyle Bade and Christian Garcia combined to take the sixth inning and allowed two runs (one earned).

Lucas Shannon and Chaz McRoberts threw the last two frames as the latter worked around a couple of hits for a scoreless outing.

NOTABLE
  • With a single in the first inning to open the game. Moran extended his on-base streak to 19 games since March 8. During that span, the sophomore is hitting .338 (27-for-80). He also registered his fourth 3-hit game of the season on Sunday.
  • Gauna's RBI single, which scored Moran, marked his 30th RBI of the season, taking the team lead over from Jayden Lobliner
  • Gauna, who was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday, extended his hitting streak to eight games, which is the team's active leader. He is hitting .489 (22-for-45) in WCC play, which is the second-best mark in the conference.
  • Palencia notched his second straight outing with at least five strikeouts and the fourth time this season the sophomore has reached that mark.
