Bueno's Torero Debut a Bright Spot in Midweek Loss at CSUF

San Diego suffers 13-0 defeat in seven innings on Tuesday night in Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — On Tuesday, San Diego baseball made the trip up to Cal State Fullerton looking to avenge its loss to the Titans from earlier this season.

The Toreros (13-21, 6-5 West Coast Conference) were unable to capitalize in their second and final meeting with CSUF (18-17, 11-7 Big West) this year, falling 13-0 in seven innings at Goodwin Field.

USD only had one hit, which came off the bat of Jayton Greer in the fifth inning.

The fifth also saw San Diego's biggest scoring threat as Greer's single was followed by a hit by pitch from Cade Martinez to put runners at first and second with no one out.

But Martinez advanced no further after Nico Button lined into a double play in which Greer got caught at second base. The inning ended when Gage Mestas struck out.

Diego Gonzalez was the only other Torero to get into scoring position. He walked in the fourth inning and stole second before being stranded.

CSU Fullerton scored in each of the first five frames, including a seven-run second inning.

Reece Bueno struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth in what marked his first appearance in a Torero uniform.

Aídan Gonzalez threw a scoreless sixth inning, highlighted by recording a couple of strikeouts.

NOTABLE
  • Aídan Gonzalez registered his fourth scoreless appearance this season and first since putting together three in a row at San Diego State (February 22), at California (March 6) and against Oregon State (March 13) Tuesday also marked the senior's second straight appearance with at least two strikeouts.
  • Greer, who went 1-for-3, recorded his third straight game with a base hit.
  • Diego Gonzalez logged his fifth stolen base of the season and is now 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts

USD returns to Fowler Park this weekend for a seven-game homestand beginning with a conference series against WCC newcomer Seattle U from April 17-19. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Braden Surprenant and Mike Gosling on the call. Live statistics will be made available via StatBroadcast.
