SAN DIEGO – No. 50 San Diego women's tennis posted a quick 4-0 shutout victory over Washington State on Saturday morning at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center, ending the hot Cougars' eight-game win streak and moving firmly into second place in the WCC with their second straight sweep of a conference opponent.
The Toreros set the tone early in doubles, claiming the point on courts two and three. The freshman pairing of Vilma KrebsHyllested and Maria Shmakova led the way on court two, delivering a dominant 6-0 shutout of Eva Alvarez Sande and Ava-Monet Sycamore to back up their WCC Doubles Team of the Week honor from a week ago. On court three, the junior duo of Charlotte Keitel and Kristina Nordikyan were not far behind, taking a 6-3 win over Yura Nakagawa and Zali Morris to clinch the doubles point.
San Diego wasted no time in singles, with Hannah Read opening the scoring on court three with one of the more dominant performances of the Torero season, cruising past Martina Puvill 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Ines Leon followed immediately after on court four, topping Yura Nakagawa 6-3, 6-4 to push USD's lead to 3-0.
The first year Dane Krebs Hyllested then clinched the sweep with her first career ranked win, winning her first set 6-2 and claiming the second 7-6, winning the tiebreak 7-2 over nationally ranked No. 120 Maxine Murphy to seal the 4-0 result.
With the outcome decided, the remaining courts played out. On court one, Keitel held a 6-2, 2-0 lead in the third set against No. 90 Eva Alvarez Sande on main court when the match was abandoned. Shmakova was in a battle on court five and Moll held a 6-2, 6-6 advantage on court six, both going unfinished.
