Gauna Plays the Hero in Wild Walk-Off Win Over Seattle U

Toreros score three times in the bottom of the ninth to erase late deficit, beat Redhawks 13-12 in series finale

SAN DIEGO — Jayton Greer and the Toreros were one strike away from losing and being swept against Seattle U Sunday. Greer worked an eight-pitch walk to keep the game alive and flip the lineup back to the top.

The top of the lineup delivered as CJ Moran and Gage Mestas both singled as Vincent Venverloh, who pinch ran for Greer, came around to tie the game, setting up Andrew Gauna.

On the first pitch he saw, Gauna came up big with a sharp single up the middle of his own, scoring Moran to cap off a seesaw, 13-12 walk-off victory for San Diego and spark a joyous onfield celebration on Little League Day at Fowler Park.

"I told myself I didn't want to be passive, I wanted to be aggressive," said the graduate student, who capped off the series with his second three-hit game of the weekend. "That helped me calm the nerves and do what I had to do. Luckily, I ended up coming up with the clutch knock."

Diego Gonzalez opened the bottom of the ninth for San Diego (14-23, 7-8 WCC) with a moonshot down the right field line for his second home run of the afternoon after hitting a two-run shot to punctuate a five-run first inning against Seattle U (14-20, 9-6 WCC).

Gonzalez, who became the first Torero this season to have a multi-home run game, took advantage of a hitters meeting before stepping up to the plate in the final inning.

"It's just letting all the hitters know that we all believe in each other," the true freshman said. "That's the message that's been spread across the team. Everybody believes in each other."

Before the Fowler Magic came alive for the first time since February 27 when Moran walked off Michigan, Caleb Sebek overcame a home run in the top of the inning before battling back and retiring the side with two straight strikeouts.

Collecting outs was a common theme for Torero relievers Hayden Cody, Aidan Gonzalez, Logan Piper, Chaz McRoberts and Sebek, who threw the final six innings of Sunday's series finale after Fernando Palencia tossed the first three frames.

"He responded quite well from pitching on Friday, asking a lot of them to pitch tonight," head coach Brock Ungricht said of Sebek. "Today, the stuff didn't fall off much. Came in there today, poured in strikes. Got the sinker and the slider going, really filled at the bottom of the zone, unfortunately gave up a two-strike homer and comes right back in.

"(The message to the entire bullpen was) if you give up hits, give up runs on a day like this, just keep going in there and keep getting outs. Gonzo being able to collect outs. Logan Piper being able to collect a couple of outs. Chaz McRoberts coming back again and getting some outs and then Sebek coming in and getting that big double play in the eighth."

Out of the 13 runs San Diego scored on Sunday, only seven were earned by Seattle pitching. The Toreros wanted to make sure they took advantage of miscues, which they did early and often.

"Capitalizing on mistakes is how you win ballgames, huge momentum switch," Gonzalez said. "Before the game we're talking about free 90s and taking advantage of every extra base they give up. Every 90 feet is super important."

All three of San Diego's runs in the fourth and fifth innings came off of Seattle errors, including a Mestas' RBI single the other way that scored Howard in the fifth to take a 9-5 lead.

San Diego forced some Seattle U mistakes, too. In the bottom of the sixth inning, with Jayden Lobliner on third, Diego Gonzalez deliberately broke for second before Redhawks reliever Blake Smith started his windup, jarring the SU defense and eventually Smith into a balk that sent Lobliner home to give the Toreros a 10-8 lead.

After Seattle U got the scoring started in the first inning, all nine Toreros came to the plate in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Gonzalez working an eight-pitch at-bat and launching a ball over the right field wall, scoring Connor Meidroth.

The bottom of the first inning started with three straight hits as Moran took a first pitch single up the middle before Mestas brought back a bunt and slashed the ball down the right field line for an RBI triple to tie the game. Then, Gauna blooped one into center field, bringing Mestas home.

After Lobliner sacrificed Gauna to second base on a bunt, Meidroth reached on an error, leading to Gauna coming home before Gonzalez's third collegiate home run.

NOTABLE

The five-run first inning was USD's first of 2026. It is the first time USD accomplished a five-run first inning since last year against No. 2 Gonzaga during the WCC Tournament (May 23, 2025).
- It is also the first time that USD has scored five runs in the first inning at Fowler Park since facing San Diego St. (April 23, 2024)
The top four hitters in San Diego's lineup – Moran, Mestas, Gauna and Lobliner – hit a combined .524 (11-for-21), including the first three garnering three-hit games.
Mestas, who got his second start of the season Sunday in the No. 2 spot of the Toreros lineup and first since the second game of the doubleheader at California (March 7), went 3-for-6 with three RBI, including his first triple in a USD uniform in the first inning and the game-tying single in the ninth inning
With a three-hit day, Gauna has multi-hit performances in 13 of his last 21 games, dating back to March 11.
In the second inning, Moran recorded his sixth home run of 2026, and sits alone in second place for total home runs on the USD roster.
Gonzalez became the first Torero this season to record a two-homer game by hammering longballs in the first and ninth innings, doubling his dinger total from two to four.
Gonzalez's home run was USD's 30th long ball of the season.
Sebek earned his first collegiate victory and improved to 1-1 on the season.
Sunday tied Cody's second longest outing this season at 2.1 innings pitched.
With three strikeouts, Cody has at least one punchout in eight of his last nine appearances since March 8 at California, including four against the Golden Bears.
Sunday was Little League Day at Fowler Park as 10 local teams paraded throughout the warning track before Sunday's contest between the Toreros and the Redhawks.
There were 1,087 people who made their way through the gates at Fowler Park Sunday. USD leads the WCC in both home attendance (16,234) and average home attendance (902)

Ungricht on his freshmen, such as Gonzalez, Sebek and Greer stepping up:
- "These freshmen getting the experience, that makes me smile, because at some point, you ask them not to be freshmen anymore, not spooked by the moment, and go out and play baseball. I'm seeing some really good things with some of our young guys."
Ungricht on having Little League Day at Fowler Park:
- "Calling all future Toreros! (I) want those guys to dream big about playing here and wearing this uniform and representing San Diego. It's all about the community of San Diego for us and helping out the youth and promoting baseball in a positive light and give them a good experience for a venue to be able to come and watch baseball, and a good, good experience for our youth in San Diego to be able to grow the game."
Gauna on having Little League Day and playing in front of young players:
- "Little League Day is something that I look forward to every week. To be able to pack this stadium out with young fans, Little Leaguers that hope to to once play where we are, it truly is inspiring, and it's everything that I play for. I pride myself in being a very joyful person, and that's something that really brings joy to me is being able to see all their smiles and hearing all the laughter and shouting during the game on the Torero Deck."
