Diego Gonzalez Homers in Tough Loss to Saint Mary's

Toreros drop 14-3 decision to Gaels in seven innings at Fowler Park on Saturday evening

SAN DIEGO — True freshman Diego Gonzalez hit his sixth home run of the season on Saturday evening, but it was not enough as San Diego baseball fell 14-3 to Saint Mary's in seven innings at Fowler Park.

Gonzalez, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, hit his fourth home run in four games as his two-run shot plated Andrew Gauna in the sixth inning.

Gonzalez also scored the first run for the Toreros (15-25, 7-10 WCC) in the second inning. He led off the inning with a base hit to right field before moving to second base on a hit by a pitch from Jayden Lobliner and advanced to third on a fielder's choice from Phoenix Brant

The first-year second baseman came around to score on a RBI single by Cade Martinez

However, that came after the Gaels (25-17, 10-7 WCC) scored two runs in the first inning and six in the second.

Saint Mary's eventually went on to take an 11-1 lead after four innings.

Kyle Bade pitched the final four frames in relief to help preserve the Torero bullpen heading into Sunday's series finale.

After San Diego got a couple runs back in the sixth, the Gaels scored three more times to make it 14-3 and invoke the 10-run mercy rule.

NOTABLE
  • Gonzalez registered his sixth home run of the season and his fourth home run in his last four games.
  • Gonzalez also logged his fourth straight two-hit game and extended his hitting streak to five games since facing Seattle U (April 18).
  • Bade pitched the final four innings in relief. It his his longest outing since reaching that mark in his first four starts of the season, including completing four innings at Cal (March 7).
  • Lobliner, who was named the 2025 WCC Defensive Player of the Year, gunned down his eighth runner trying to steal a base this season, to end the sixth inning.
