Toreros Return Home for NCAA Championship at La Costa

San Diego makes second straight national championship appearance, opens Friday in Carlsbad

HOW TO FOLLOW THE ACTION: SAN DIEGO — University of San Diego men's golf returns to its own backyard this week, opening play Friday, May 29 at the 2026 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California — roughly 35 miles up the coast from campus.

The Toreros punched their ticket in dramatic fashion last Wednesday, lighting up the back nine at the NCAA Corvallis Regional with 11 birdies to climb into a tie for fifth at 9-under and force a playoff with Liberty. In the five-hole playoff, clutch birdies from Ian Maspat and Cooper Humphreys sent USD through to the national championship for the sixth time in program history and the second straight season.

San Diego enters in form after a strong showing in Corvallis. Sophomore You Seong Choi and freshman Reed Arnaldo paced the Toreros at 2-under and a tie for 21st, while freshman Reid Piron closed with a 4-under 67 to surge 29 spots up the leaderboard. Redshirt senior Ian Maspat — the reigning WCC individual champion and an All-WCC First Team selection — fired a bogey-free 3-under 68 in the final round, days after recording a hole-in-one to highlight the second round.

This week extends a sustained run of postseason success for the Torero program. San Diego has now reached the NCAA postseason in six consecutive seasons, earning a regional berth every year since 2020-21. By battling through the playoff in Corvallis, the Toreros also locked up back-to-back appearances at the NCAA Championship, returning to the same La Costa stage where they competed a season ago. It marks the program's sixth all-time national championship berth — joining 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2020-21 and 2024-25 — and this year it comes on home turf in San Diego County.
