SAN DIEGO — University of San Diego student-athletes turned in one of their strongest academic years in recent memory in 2025-26, headlined by a department-record 3.411 grade-point average across all 16 Torero programs in the spring semester.
The 3.411 spring figure broke the previous department record of 3.40, set just months ago in the fall of 2025, and marked the second consecutive semester that the Toreros established an all-time high GPA. It also continued a steady climb that has lifted the department GPA in each of the past four grading periods, up from 3.27 in spring 2024.
Eight of USD's 16 programs posted a team GPA of 3.50 or better in the spring, paced by men's tennis (3.88) and men's cross country (3.78). Women's tennis (3.65), women's soccer (3.60), women's swimming & diving (3.56), men's soccer (3.54), women's cross country (3.54) and women's rowing (3.52) also cleared the mark, while 14 of USD's 16 programs finished at 3.00 or above.
"We are extremely proud of the academic success our student-athletes have achieved this Spring," said
Dr. Magdi El Shahawy, USD's Associate Athletic Director for Academics. "USD is an institution where the student-athlete is still a student first and the commitment to being excellent in both academics and athletics is a priority amongst all our teams. Credit goes to each of our student-athletes for the dedication placed on academic success and to our coaches for emphasizing the importance of excelling in the classroom. This is also a testament to the hard work our athletic academic services team (
Kiana Adams,
Adalee Broadbent,
Jonathan Curran, and
JoAnn Vallese) puts in behind the scenes each day guiding and supporting our student-athletes to ensure they are maximizing their potential as a student at USD."
The classroom success also extended to individual recognition, as 101 Toreros earned USD President's Honor Roll distinction for the 2025-26 academic year and 92 San Diego student-athletes collected 92 All-Academic selections across 14 sports and three conferences in 2025-2026.
Women's rowing led the department with 18 All-Academic honorees, followed by women's swimming & diving (16) and women's soccer (13). Men's tennis placed all four of its honorees on the First Team — four of the 12 First Team spots leaguewide, the most of any school. Thirty-four San Diego student-athletes from 16 different sports posted a perfect 4.0 GPA this spring, including six with a stellar 4.0 cumulative GPA.
The Toreros' academic standing was reinforced this spring by the annual release of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 10 of USD's programs recording a perfect 1,000 single-year score in the most recent reporting period. Men's cross country, women's swimming & diving and women's volleyball each posted a perfect 1,000 multi-year APR. USD's department multi-year APR of 992 ranked third in the West Coast Conference, with every sponsored sport comfortably above the NCAA's 930 benchmark and eight programs leading or tied for first in their respective sports.
USD's most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) told a similar story. The Toreros posted a 94% GSR — the third-highest mark in department history — with seven programs earning a perfect score. The national average across all Division I student-athletes was 90%.
Taken together, from grade-point averages and President's Honor Roll selections to national APR and GSR benchmarks, the results underscore the high academic standard that has become a hallmark of Torero Athletics.
