SAN DIEGO — Longtime Torero pitcher and USD alum Drake Frize has been added to the San Diego baseball coaching staff as a Pitching Analytics Coordinator, head coach Brock Ungricht announced on Thursday evening.

"Over the last six seasons, Drake Frize has epitomized the work ethic, determination, and will to win that our program is built upon, and I am thrilled to bring him onto our coaching staff as a Pitching Analytics Coordinator," said Ungricht. "His success as a Torero on the mound, baseball acumen, and strong communication skills will elevate our staff as he helps provide our pitchers with data-driven, impactful and accessible information. Keeping Drake in a San Diego uniform is a natural fit for our team, and a big win for our program."

A native of Orange, California, Frize concluded his college career this spring after spending six years on the USD roster from 2021 to 2026. After redshirting in his freshman campaign in 2021, he appeared in 24 games and threw 21.2 innings as a redshirt freshman (2022) and redshirt sophomore (2023) before a breakout redshirt junior season in 2024. Frize was at his best that year, helping San Diego hoist a pair of West Coast Conference Championship trophies as he posted a 3-1 record, 2.38 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and two saves across 18 appearances and 22.2 total innings.

Frize's standout effort in 2024 earned him a selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 17th round (524th overall pick) of that summer's MLB Draft, but he elected to exercise his final year of college eligibility and recover from a UCL injury and subsequent Tommy John surgery at USD.

After missing the 2025 season as part of his rehab process, Frize returned to the mound for San Diego in February 2026 after a 652-day absence and once again became one of the Toreros' most dependable and effective pitchers, registering a 3-5 record with a 5.98 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched with 42 strikeouts. He achieved new career-highs in both innings and strikeouts in his final college appearance, throwing six innings of one-run ball with nine punchouts as part of a 7-3 USD win against Loyola Marymount at Fowler Park on May 15, 2026.

All told, he totaled seven wins, three saves, and 107 strikeouts across 58 college appearances and 97 innings pitched as a Torero, and was a part of four WCC Championships and two NCAA Tournament teams.

Frize, a 2024 WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention, graduated from USD with degrees in Real Estate and Business Administration alongside master's certificates in both Coaching Leadership and Data Analytics.
