Walls Makes Career-High Six Saves as Toreros Fall 1-0 at Cal Baptist

San Diego fired the first shot of the night and held the West Region's No. 1 team to one goal

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Chloe Walls set a career high with six saves Thursday night, but San Diego women's soccer came up a goal short against unbeaten California Baptist in a 1-0 loss at CBU Soccer Stadium.

The redshirt sophomore goalkeeper made three saves in each half, and San Diego stopped seven of the eight shots CBU put on goal.

Senior Maquena O'Callaghan put the match's first shot on goal 97 seconds in, and freshman Jonnie Quiroz made the Lancers' keeper work again in the 17th minute. The Toreros also won three corner kicks between the 19th and 28th minutes and took a 3-1 edge in corners into halftime.

"Tonight we faced the top-ranked team in the West Region, a team that hadn't conceded a goal, and I thought we came out really strong," head coach Greg LaPorte said. "We created some very good opportunities early and just needed to be more clinical in those moments."

Walls kept it scoreless at the other end with saves in the eighth, 27th and 38th minutes before CBU went ahead with 3:33 left in the first half.

After the break, the Lancers put four more shots on goal, and the Toreros stopped every one. Walls made three of those saves, in the 73rd, 77th and 82nd minutes.

Up front, freshman Lily Johnson got a shot away in the 69th minute, and senior Tamia Graham took an opportunity in the 84th. The Toreros earned a corner kick less than a minute after Graham's attempt.

"I was proud of the way we stayed in the fight, continued to push for the equalizer and competed all the way to the final whistle," LaPorte said. "It's a disappointing result, but there's a lot in this performance that we can build on moving forward."
