San Diego Hosts Santa Clara this Saturday to Open WCC Play

LAST TIME OUT

San Diego women's soccer spent last Sunday afternoon on the front foot at Griswold Stadium, outshooting Portland State 20-13, taking 10 corner kicks to three and holding 51% of possession, but a goal in the closing minutes of the first half stood up in a 1-0 result for the hosts.
All nine of San Diego's shots on goal came from nine different players, a clean snapshot of how widely the attack was spread. Eleven Toreros recorded at least one attempt on the afternoon. Ella Callanan led the way with four shots from the back line, Lily Johnson added three, and Emma Elias, Kaylee Smith, Elise Miller and Tamia Graham finished with two apiece.
Ilise Medrano made her first start of the 2026 season in goal for San Diego and went the full 90 minutes with a total of five saves. The only ball to beat her came in the 44th minute, but she answered everything Portland State put on frame the rest of the way, including both of the hosts' attempts on target in the second half.
Greg LaPorte's group came out of halftime and pushed for the equalizer for 45 straight minutes. Eleven of San Diego's 20 shots and seven of its 10 corner kicks came after the break, and the Toreros were still creating at the whistle, with the final attempt of the match arriving at the 90:00 mark.

The Toreros all-time record with the Broncos is 8-24-1, with their last time playing each other resulting in Santa Clara taking a 3-1 decision up north on Nov. 5, 2025.
The first time that the two programs faced each other was on Sept. 6, 1992 where the Broncos achieved a 2-1 victory at Torero Stadium.

CHLOE WALLS NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (AUG. 17)

San Diego redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Walls was named the WCC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Aug. 17, 2026.
Walls turned aside four shots, including a 41st-minute penalty kick, to preserve a clean sheet against CSU Fullerton on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026.
The honor is Walls' second conference weekly award of her career, following her Defensive Player of the Week nod on Aug. 25, 2025 for her stellar career debut performances in net to start last season.
She is the first Torero to be recognized since Amanda Anders earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 8, 2025.

AMANDA ANDERS NAMED TO 2026 WCC PRESEASON TEAM

San Diego forward Amanda Anders was named to the 2026 West Coast Conference Women's Soccer Preseason Team, the league announced on August 4. Anders was the lone Torero selected, and the first USD player picked to the preseason team since Milan Moses in 2019.
The recognition follows a freshman season in which Anders emerged as one of the WCC's most dangerous attacking threats. In 17 games, she scored six goals — the ninth-best mark in the conference — and added two assists for eight points.
Anders' debut was as memorable as any in recent program history. She came off the bench in her first collegiate match, a 3-3 draw with Cal Poly on August 14, and scored twice, including the tying goal with eight minutes left — becoming the first Torero freshman in 12 years to record a brace in her debut. It earned her the first of two WCC Offensive Player of the Week honors on the season, making her the first Torero ever to win the award since it split into offensive and defensive categories in 2019.
Anders earned her second Offensive Player of the Week honor three weeks later after another two-goal game off the bench in a 6-0 win over UC Riverside, vaulting her to the WCC's goal-scoring lead. She went on to score the game-winning goal in USD's 2-1 win at Portland and finished the year on the All-WCC Freshman Team.
The sport runs in the family — Anders' mother, Sherice (Bartling) Anders, starred at USD before playing professionally in the WUSA for the Boston Breakers, and was in the stands for her daughter's historic debut.

LAST YEAR: THE BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY

San Diego women's soccer head coach Greg LaPorte led the Toreros to the program's best start in program history in 2025. His second season at the helm in San Diego saw USD accomplish the following:

Go undefeated in non-conference play for the first time in program history
Start the season on an eight-match unbeaten streak
Remain unbeaten until September 26, 2025, making them one of the last teams without a loss in the nation.
Score 28 goals in 2025, which doubled the total from a year before and quadrupled the total from the season before LaPorte's takeover in 2023, which was also the program's most since 2019
13 individual Toreros combined for 28 total assists in 2025, which marked the most in a single season for the program in at least seven years
