Anders Scores Her First Goal of 2026 in 3-1 Loss to Santa Clara

Goalkeeper Chloe Walls matches her career high with six saves

SAN DIEGO — Down a goal for all of 66 seconds, the Toreros drew level with Santa Clara on an Amanda Anders header Saturday night at Torero Stadium. The Broncos went on to a 3-1 win in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Santa Clara broke through in the 24th minute, and San Diego hit right back. Marissa Morales pounced on a miscleared ball at the right end line and pulled it back for Lily Johnson, whose right-footed cross found Anders at the back post for a header from close range. The Broncos went back in front in the 28th minute on a shot from the top of the box that went in off the right post.

"We showed a good response to get ourselves back to 1-1 and had some really strong moments in the game," head coach Greg LaPorte said. "Against a quality team like Santa Clara, we have to sustain that level for the full 90 minutes. Even after going down 2-1, we kept pushing for the equalizer and competed all the way to the final whistle."

The header was Anders' first goal of the 2026 season. She put all three of her shots on frame, the most shots on goal by a Torero in a match this season. Johnson's assist was her second this season, while Morales recorded her first.

Chloe Walls made six saves, three in each half, to match the career high she set Sept. 17 at California Baptist. In front of her, the Toreros held the Broncos to five shots, with Santa Clara's lone second-half goal coming off a free kick in the 56th minute.

The Toreros outshot Santa Clara 4-2 over the final 35 minutes, earned the only corner kick of the second half and took the last three shots of the match, the final one an Anders effort in the 86th minute that forced a save.
