Matt Bergandi enters his second season with the San Diego baseball staff in 2021, serving as Volunteer Assistant Coach after spending the 2020 season as Director of Player Development. Bergandi works primarily with the Torero pitching staff and coaches to develop the team. He also handles the day to day analytics and technologies used by the team and field maintenance.
Prior to USD, Bergandi worked at San Francisco State as a volunteer assistant coach in charge of the catchers and helped the team reach the 2019 CCAA Baseball Championships. Bergandi began his coaching career at Mission College, where the Saints secured a conference championship in 2018.
Bergandi began his playing career as a catcher at USD in 2013. After two shoulder surgeries, he transferred to Mission College in 2015 and then directly to Fresno Pacific University. Bergandi caught and pitched for the Sunbirds for two seasons (2016-17). He was an Academic All-PacWest selection in 2016 and earned PacWest Pitcher of the Week honors. Bergandi had interest from MLB teams to continue at the next level, however additional injuries ended his career early in 2017.
Bergandi is a native of Los Gatos, Calif. and is the son of Frank and Terri Bergandi. He earned his BA in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific in 2017.
