Matt Hall enters his second season as an assistant coach with the USD women's soccer program in 2025, after being added to the staff in February of 2024.
In his first season as assistant under Head Coach Greg LaPorte, the staff inherited a team which had won just one match the year prior. They tripled that win total in 2024 including the program's first conference win since 2021 and a draw in the season finale against national No. 11 Santa Clara.
Within the first roster overhaul, 42.8% of the team's goals, 41.7% of assists, 100% of goalkeeper minutes and the vast majority of defensive back line minutes came from underclassmen in 2024. Defender Ella Callanan embodied the youthful development under the USD staff, earning WCC All-Freshman.
Hall has deep roots in San Diego and in Alcala Park. He returned to the University of San Diego where he played for the men's soccer team from 1999-2000 as Toreros' starting goalkeeper. A native of San Diego, Hall has most recently split two high-profile coaching duties. Hall has overseen the role as head coach of MiraCosta College, where he led the program from 2019 through the end of the 2023 season.
In addition, Hall was an assistant coach for the professional USL Championship side San Diego Loyal, where he oversaw the goalkeepers and center backs, as well as serving as head coach for the Loyal select team in the USL Academy League. During his time with the select team, Hall helped lead two players into professional deals with the senior club and helped dozens more join four-year program at the collegiate level.
While at MiraCosta, Hall led the program to a 31-6-3 record over two seasons and was named the Pacific Coast Conference Coach of the Year, as the program went on to win the PCC championship.
Prior to his work at MiraCosta and with the Loyal, Hall spent nearly 19 years with the San Diego State men's program, first as an assistant coach from 2001 to 2013, before being promoted to an associate head coach for the program from 2013 to 2020. Under his leadership, the San Diego State men's program developed a strong reputation for producing at the goalkeeper position, including two-time All-American Tally Hall and all-time saves leader Brian Barnes, among many others.
During his time at San Diego State, the program produced 13 MLS SuperDraft picks, two All-Americans and 10 All-Far West Region honorees. In addition, Hall was the director of recruiting and helped sign nine, top-40 recruiting classes during his tenure.
Hall graduated from the University of San Diego in 2000 with a degree in history, and also graduated from Vista High School in 1996. Hall earned his USSF National B License in 2008.
