A seasoned collegiate coach with a track record of success at the highest levels of the game, Blanche Alverson was named the fourth head coach in San Diego women's basketball history on March 25, 2025. The 2026-2027 season will be her second leading the Toreros.
Alverson completed her first year at the helm of the Torero program in 2025-2026, guiding San Diego to an 11-22 overall record and a 4-14 mark in West Coast Conference play. Picked to finish 11th in the 12-team WCC preseason poll, the Toreros improved by four wins overall and doubled their league win total from the previous season.
San Diego laid its foundation in non-conference play in 2025-2026, going 6-7 with wins over Utah State, UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton, New Mexico State, Southeast Missouri State and Bethesda. In league play, the Toreros protected the Jenny Craig Pavilion with home victories over Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount, Seattle U and Pacific, closing the regular season with a 64-59 win over the Tigers in front of the largest home crowd of the year.
In her first season at USD (2025-2026), Alverson built a Torero team that made its living on the glass and around the rim. San Diego ranked 65th nationally and second in the WCC in offensive rebounds per game (13.6), 71st nationally in total rebounding (39.4) and 79th nationally in rebound margin (+4.2), the third-best figure in the conference. The Toreros also blocked 3.5 shots per game, 120th nationally and fourth in the WCC, while holding opponents to 39.6 percent shooting and 63.8 points per game — both fifth-best marks in the league.
Seeded 11th at the 2026 WCC Tournament, San Diego opened with a 66-62 win over 10-seed Saint Mary's at Orleans Arena, riding a 21-point fourth quarter behind Hallie Rhodes' game-high 22 points and a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double from Kylie Ray. The Toreros' season ended a day later in a 61-52 second-round loss to seventh-seeded San Francisco.
Two Toreros earned All-WCC recognition in Alverson's debut season. Sophomore guard Kylie Ray was named to the 2025-2026 All-WCC Second Team after finishing fourth in the conference at 15.9 points per game, 113th nationally, and ranking 15th in the country in free throw percentage at 89.5 percent, second-best in the WCC. Her 422 field goal attempts were the fourth-most in the conference. Freshman guard Olivia Owens earned 2025-2026 All-WCC Freshman Team honors, averaging 11.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while pacing the Toreros in both steals (48) and assists (75).
And five Toreros — Lilly Amor, Hallie Rhodes, Jayden Rhodes, Eva Ruse and Malia Tharpe — earned 2025-2026 WCC All-Academic Honorable Mentions in Alverson's inaugural campaign in Alcala Park.
Alverson joined the San Diego family after six seasons at Georgia Tech, where served as associate head coach. She helped lead the Yellow Jackets to four postseason appearances, including three NCAA Tournaments, three 20-plus win seasons, 12 victories over ranked opponents, and the program's second-ever NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 run in 2021. Most recently, Georgia Tech spent 11 weeks in the national rankings during the 2024-25 season, climbing as high as No. 13 in the Associated Press poll and setting program records for longest win streak (15 games) and most three-pointers made in a single game (15 vs. Florida A&M), highlighting the influence of Alverson's fast-paced offensive identity.

Alverson began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech and has held assistant coaching roles at New Mexico State, USC and Georgia Tech. She has been instrumental in recruiting nationally ranked classes, mentoring all-conference and all-academic performers, and fostering high-performing cultures on and off the court. Her coaching resume includes working with McDonald's All-Americans, developing an ACC Most Improved Player, and serving in key roles in player development, operations, and academic support.

In 2021, Alverson helped guide Georgia Tech to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in the program's 10th overall appearance. The Yellow Jackets finished third in the ACC that season, their highest-ever outright finish, and earned a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament — also a program best.
Prior to her time in Atlanta, Alverson spent two seasons at USC, where she helped secure the No. 5 recruiting class in the country and mentored multiple All-Pac-12 selections. She also led academic initiatives, with several student-athletes earning conference academic honors under her guidance.
In 2016-17, Alverson helped guide New Mexico State to a 14-0 conference record, a third straight WAC Tournament title, and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Her role included working with both guards and posts and helping to mentor a WAC Player of the Year.

A native of Andalusia, Alabama, Alverson was a four-year letter winner at Auburn University, where she played under head coach Nell Fortner. She finished her career ranked second all-time in three-point field goals made and became just the fourth player in program history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals, and 50 blocks. A two-time SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she was named to the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team in 2013.
Alverson earned her bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences from Auburn in 2013 and her master's degree in sports management from Texas Tech in 2016.
