San Diego, CA- Host San Diego handed visiting and 20th ranked Loyola Marymount a 2-0 loss Sunday afternoon in Torero Stadium. Katie Allen's goal in the 65th minute gave USD a 1-0 lead and Colleen Fogarty would add another as the Toreros improved to 7-5-3. The Lions overall record moved to 7-4-3.
A perfect lead pass from San Diego junior Marie Claude-Henry allowed Allen to break a scoreless tie mid-way through the second half. Allen avoided a charging LMU goalkeeper and found the net despite pressure from a pair of Lion defenders.
San Diego junior Brooke Roby generated an insurance goal for San Diego on a crossing pass to senior forward Colleen Fogarty. Roby's pass created a collision in front of the goal between Fogarty and LMU keeper Kelly Yukihiro. As both players fell to the ground the ball tricked into the net giving USD a 2-0 lead.
Both teams totaled seven shots on the afternoon and played a very even match through the first 45 minutes of play. Loyola Marymount (0-2 WCC) was inches away from scoring as the first half came to an end. On a bouncing ball that eluded USD goal keeper Libby Bassett and reached the goal line, an opportunistic Torero defender came up with a save to keep things scoreless at halftime.
The win Sunday was the first league victory for USD (1-2 WCC). San Diego begins a three-game road trip with a match against WCC member St. Mary's next Friday at 3pm.
