San Diego, CA- No. 16 Loyola Marymount jumped out to an early two-game lead and held on to defeat San Diego at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion Friday night. San Diego (17-11; 6-7 WCC) rallied late but would suffer its fifth consecutive loss, dropping into fifth place in the West Coast Conference standings. Loyola Marymount (25-5; 10-3 WCC) won by game scores of (30-20, 30-19, 25-30, 30-26).
The Lions were never challenged in the opening two games. Senior Kealani Kimball killed 22 and teammate Kelli Nerison put down 12 to pace the visitors. After heading into the locker room having cruised to a pair of wins, LMU was overmatched in game three. San Diego looked like the team ranked as high as No. 16 earlier this season, playing inspired volleyball to claim the third set 30-25.
USD junior Kristen Hurst killed a career-high 25 Friday night and sophomore Lindsey Sherburne passed out 63 assists. However the Toreros could not bounce back from its sluggish start, exchanging points in the decisive fourth game before losing the frame 30-26.
