A 16-2 run to open the second half allowed host San Diego an exhibition victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona (Div II) Friday night at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. Torero guard Brett Melton scored a game-high 26 points on 6-of-12 shooting from three-point range. Forward Brice Vounang added 22 points and collected 13 rebounds as San Diego won by a final score of 90-70. Pomona was able to hang around in the first half thanks to the play of forward Jeff Bonds, who led the Broncos with 21 points and 11 boards.
San Diego held a 44-36 advantage at halftime despite losing junior starter Corey Belser to injury just three minutes into the contest. Belser was taken to the San Diego training room and returned to the USD bench on crutches. He would watch teammates Nick Lewis and Brad Lechtenberg reach double-figures in scoring. Lewis totaled 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Lechtenberg connected on four three-pointers to score 14.
As a team USD shot 49% from the floor. A total of 11 USD players participated in Friday night's exhibition. The game marked the final tune-up for a San Diego team that opens its 2003-04 season at Xavier's BCA Classic in Cincinnati, Ohio next weekend. USD's first round opponent will be Michigan's Oakland University on Saturday, November 15th at 12noon with the possibility of playing UC Irvine, Illinois-Chicago, Xavier, Coppin State, Mercer, and Ohio as tournament play continues Nov. 15-17.
