Wearing road blues Wednesday night at San Diego State's Cox Arena, the USD women's basketball team rallied to defeat their city rivals 65-60. The victory for the Toreros is the second in as many meetings between the two local schools.
Marta Menuez scored a team-high 17 for USD and forward
Melissa Padgett registered another double-double, scoring 10 points and clearing 10 rebounds. Sophomore point guard
Polly Dong made clutch plays down the stretch for a Torero team that overcame a 14-point deficit to claim its second win of the season.
San Diego State (3-3) shot 42% from the field in the first half, leading by as many as 14 with 2:37 remaining before intermission. Aztec guard Courtney Fritz buried four treys and matched a season-high with 21 points. Sophomore Ashlee Dunlap totaled 14 rebounds and 10 points and guard Michelle Elliott scored 14 for SDSU.
San Diego (2-5) went on an 11-2 run over the final three minutes of the opening half to cut into San Diego State's early lead. On the night four different Toreros connected from beyond the arc. Sophomore standouts Brandi Collato, Tiara Harris and Dong each netted key three-point baskets in the second half. Padgett's 10-rebound, three-block performance in the paint was complemented by a pair of long range buckets.
USD turned up its defensive intensity in the second half, using a match-up zone to limit the Aztecs to just 30% shooting from the floor. San Diego State was unable to exploit the defense, going 1-for-10 from three-point range over the game's final 20 minutes.
"We turned our intensity up," said USD senior Marta Menuez. "We knew we could play with these guys. We just had to pick it up a notch."
Up next for San Diego is PAC-10 member USC Saturday at 4pm in the L.A. Sports Arena.
