Long Beach State overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat San Diego 65-57 in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. Led by sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon, Long Beach State (2-4) went on an 18-6 run over the game's final nine minutes. San Diego (1-5) received 18 points from senior center Marta Menuez while classmate Melissa Padgett registered a double-double, scoring 16 points and totaling 10 rebounds.
San Diego played inspired basketball as the afternoon began, taking a 35-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Both Menuez and Padgett scored 10 first half points and Menuez's lay-up moments into the second half allowed San Diego its biggest lead at 37-23. Immediately the 49ers responded, outscoring the Toreros 18-4 over the next six minutes to even the game at 41-41 with 14:07 remaining.
Long Beach State shot 66% from the field in the second half, compared to a San Diego team that was 0-for-11 from three-point range over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore guard Crystal McCutcheon scored a game-high 21 points for the 49ers and junior Petra Glaser added 15.
San Diego's Polly Dong handed out seven assists for a Torero team that now prepares for road games with rival San Diego State (Wednesday 7pm) and USC (Saturday 4pm).
