San Diego, CA- With the match tied at one game apiece, San Diego came from behind to take game three and eventually the match, claiming its home opener Friday night 3-1 over Fresno State. After trailing 30-29 in a very entertaining third game, consecutive kills by San Diego junior Devon Forster allowed the Toreros to hold off the Bulldogs in front of 429 fans in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Individual game scores were (30-22, 21-30, 33-31, 30-26).
San Diego improved to 5-2 on the year and will face both Long Beach State (7pm) and Maryland Eastern Shore (10am) Saturday as the 2003 USD Invitational Tournament continues. The Toreros played inspired volleyball, led by Forster's match-best 26 kills and 69 assists from sophomore setter Lindsey Sherburne.
Fresno State seemed overmatched early on, falling behind 20-11 in game one and eventually dropping the opening frame 30-22. The Bulldogs, paced by 21 kills from junior Kristen Fenton, would rally to dominate in game two, easily beating USD 30-21. After the leading late and eventually losing a highly competitive game three, the Bulldogs would hit just .178 and .158 in games three and four as their overall record fell to 6-2.
The home fans at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion saw freshman attackers Christie Dawson and Cassie Wolpern combine to register 25 kills. Wolpern, a native of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, posted 20 digs in her home debut. Upperclassmen Bridgett Merritt and Kristen Hurst recorded eight and ten kills respectively.
