SAN DIEGO (AP) - Glen McGowan scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the first half and Yakhouba Diawara had 18 points to lead Pepperdine to an 88-79 win over San Diego on Saturday.
Pepperdine (7-12, 2-2 West Coast Conference) won for just the second time in eight games, and San Diego (3-14, 0-2) lost its sixth straight game.
McGowan hit seven of nine shots from the floor as the Waves took control midway through the first half. Trailing 18-16, Pepperdine took the lead for good on Chase Griffin's 3-pointer at the 9:42 mark and outscored the Toreros 31-13 the rest of the half. The Waves led 47-31 at halftime.
The Waves, who shot 60 percent from the floor, twice had 21-point leads in the second half before San Diego made the final score look closer with some late points.
Brice Vounang scored 19 points before fouling out for the Toreros.
Terrance Johnson scored 17 points for Pepperdine and made three 3-pointers. The Waves made 12 of 23 shots from 3-point range.
Brandon Gay added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Toreros, who played without guard Brad Lechtenberg. Coach Brad Holland said that Lechtenberg, a starter in 11 games this season, would be suspended a minimum of five games for violating team rules.
