MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine Waves women's basketball squad established new season-highs in seven team categories on Saturday night after crushing San Diego 90-49 at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves, paced by junior Shanell Law's 16 points and five 3-pointers, shot a season-high 50.7 percent from the field (36-71) while holding the Toreros to just 34.0 percent.
With the win, Pepperdine improves to 8-9 on the season and 2-2 in WCC action. Meanwhile, San Diego dropped its third-straight game and falls to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The threesome of Law, Shandrika Lee and Kelly Greathouse combined for 49 of the Waves total points. Lee contributed four 3-pointers and two field goals for 16 points, while Greathouse went 6-for-9 from the field (16 points) and added a career-high five blocks. Lee also pitched in a career-high eight assists for the home team. Nicole Funn donated 11 points, four assists, two blocks, and two steals to round out the double-figure scorers for Pepperdine.
"All season long, I knew once our shots started to fall that we would be okay," said Pepperdine head coach Mark Trakh ."For the last two games, I've seen a major change in our player's confidence and attitude. They have been smiling and just enjoying themselves...as a coach, that's all I can ask for."
With the game tied at 10-10 with 13:52 remaining on the clock, Greathouse finished a jumper that would spark a 35-4 run for the Waves. Pepperdine's pressure defense, resulting in seven steals in the first half, would give the Waves a cushioned 51-19 lead at the break.
In the second half, Lee immediately came out and completed a 3-pointer to give Pepperdine a momentum they never loss as the Waves waltzed away 90-49. Other outstanding performances went to freshman Kerra Wodarski who had nine points and Jennifer Lacy and Kelli Spencer who recorded a respectable seven rebounds.
Marta Menuez was the only USD player to score in double-figures as she registered 11 points and added seven boards.
The Waves set new season-highs in points (90), field goals made (36), field goal percentage (50.7), 3-pointers made (14), 3-point percentage (58.3), assists (22), and blocked shots (11).
