USD Women Knock Off WCC Leading Gaels

Jan. 22, 2004

Box Score

In front of a local television audience courtesy of Channel 4 San Diego, the Toreros of USD knocked off league leading St. Mary's 53-45. Lindsay Helvey scored 14 points and cleared eight rebounds, sparking a second half run that allowed San Diego (6-11; 1-3 WCC) to improve their overall record and pick up its first conference win. St. Mary's (11-7; 3-1 WCC), who came into the Thursday's game atop the league standings, held a 25-22 advantage at the half and led by as many as 10 early on.

The San Diego rally was sparked by the sophomore tandem of Helvey and Brandi Collato, each connecting on a pair of second half three's. Torero head coach Kathy Marpe received another outstanding performance from her senior center Marta Menuez, who posted her first double-double of the year (14 points, 10 rebounds).

Before the game, Menuez was honored in front of the local fans for becoming just the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career. Menuez also realized another milestone, eclipsing the 500 rebound plateau Thursday night after entering the game with 495.

St. Mary's was paced by Evynn Van Berger's 13 points and 11 rebounds. San Diego native Triola Jackson scored 10 and added eight rebounds.

The T.V. appearance was the first for San Diego this season. After playing San Francisco at home this Saturday at 7pm, USD will again play in front of the cameras next Thursday in Portland at 5pm, a game carried by Fox Sports Northwest.
