For the second straight night
Marta Menuez registered a double-double, scoring 19 points and clearing 12 rebounds- but it was not enough as San Diego lost for the sixth time in seven games. Visiting San Francisco (8-10; 1-4 WCC) received 25 points from senior Corey Sauer and 28 from junior guard Toni Russell to defeat San Diego (6-12; 1-4) in front of 682 fans at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Both teams shot the ball well, as four different Torero guards hit two or more three-point baskets. USD sophomore Lindsay Helvey buried three long balls and finished with 15 points. Classmate Tiara Harris was 2-for-3 from downtown and posted 10 points to complement her four assists. Menuez again was the catalyst for USD in the losing effort.
San Francisco went to the free-throw line 41 times, converting 28. Russell's game-high 28 points was accomplished making 9-of-15 free throws, three treys and shooting 8-of-16 overall from the floor. The Dons led by 10, 38-28, at the half and would not allow USD to close the gap in the second half.
The Toreros will next travel to both Portland and Spokane. A 5pm TV game with Portland awaits your Toreros Thursday January 29, followed by a 7pm date at Gonzaga on Saturday January 31.
