(San Diego, CA) - San Diego continued its dominance over visiting Portland Friday night, sweeping the Pilots 3-0 in the West Coast Conference opener for both schools. Game scores went (30-20, 30-24, 30-22). The Toreros (7-4; 1-0) received a three-game career-high 17 digs from senior Kristen Hurst and All-America candidate Devon Forster put down 15 kills. Portland (9-4; 0-1) had won nine-of-twelve before running into a USD team that has not lost to the Pilots since 1991. San Diego's current home stand continues against Gonzaga Saturday at 7pm.
In front of a large home crowd at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, San Diego raced out to a 7-3 lead in game one. Forster served a pair of aces in the opening frame to move past USD great Petia Yanchulova into second place on the all-time Torero aces list. San Diego hit .361 collectively in game one en route to a 30-20 win.
Game two saw USD again stake an early advantage, but Portland pulled even at 17 and took the lead moments later on a kill by junior Sara Vercruyssen. San Diego immediately answered with a 6-1 run, taking control of the game to win 30-24 despite hitting a lowly .161.
Junior setter Lindsey Sherburne once again turned in an excellent outing, dishing out 39 assists (13.00 per/game) Friday night. Sherburne's 12 assists and Forster's six kills in game three put the Pilots away. Junior libero Jackie Bernardin totaled 10 digs on the night and had seven in the final frame.
