USD RUNS BY SOUTHERN OREGON 51-10

(San Diego, CA) - The USD Torero football team turned in another outstanding defensive effort and hit on all cylinders offensively in handing the visiting Southern Oregon Raiders a 51-10 setback at Torero Stadium. The Torero win snapped USD's (2-3) two-game skid after back-to-back home losses to Penn and Princeton of the Ivy League. Southern Oregon, ranked 23rd in the NAIA Top-25 polls, also owns a 2-3 mark.

Junior running back Evan Harney set the tone early with a 50-yard run on his first carry of the game. In the Toreros opening drive (7 plays, 70 yards) he accounted for 5 rushes for 61 yards that was capped off by his 3-yard TD run with 10:25 left in the 1st quarter. The touchdown was his 23rd career rushing TD which sets a new USD all-time mark. Kicker Hutch Parker added a 30-yard field goal with 1:55 left in the quarter for a 10-0 lead.

Senior LB Jeff Langdon intercepted an SOU pass late in the 1st quarter that set up USD's third score. QB Todd Mortensen connected with Jon Polk for an 8-yard TD reception for a 16-0 lead. Southern Oregon finally got on the scoreboard with 11:01 left in the 1st half with backup QB Boomer Marshall connecting with Bobby Poeltl for a 17-yard score. The Toreros closed out the half with two more scores as Mortensen connected with WR Michael Gasperson for a 42-yard TD and Harney added his 2nd rushing TD, this time from 33 yards with 3:23 to go.

After intermission Mortensen connected with two more receivers for TDs as he hit Nick Garton for a 14-yard TD with 5:56 left in the 3rd period, and to Adam Hannula for a 29-yard pass with 3:03 to go. A Ronnie Pentz interception put USD on the SOU 3-yard line late in the 3rd period and backup QB Josh Johnson found the endzone on a 1-yard keeper around the left side for the final points of the game. Neither team scored in the 4th period.

Harney finished with a season-best 203 yards rushing on 30 carries for 2 TDs. Mortensen completed 10-of-20 passes for 149 yards and threw 4 TDs to four different Torero receivers. John Koker turned in a solid of punting averaging 42.0 yards on 4 punts with a long of 56 yards and 1 downed inside the SOU 20. Defensively USD was paced by linebackers Jeff Langdon (7 tackles, 1 interception) and Kyson Hawkins (5 tackles, 2 for loss).

The Toreros begin PFL play on the road next week with a 1 pm game at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa
