Toreros Fall To San Jose State 71-70
(San Diego, CA) - The USD men's basketball team (2-2) saw their two-game win streak snapped today by the visiting San Jose State Spartans (2-1), 71-70. USD battled back from a 39-29 halftime deficit, and a 12-point deficit early in the 2nd half, to take 1 point leads on four different occasions, the last at 70-69 with 3:22 to go on a bucket by Brice Vounang. SJSU took back the lead at 71-70 on a Marquin Chandler bucket with 2:08 left, and from there USD was unable to cash in on three shots and four free throws down the stretch. USD next plays at San Diego State on Wednesday, Dec. 1st at Cox Arena.
USD got a big night out of Brandon Gay who matched his season-high of 26 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Brice Vounang tallied a double-double with 10 points/11 rebounds, and Ross DeRogatis and Avi Fogel each chipped in with 10 points.
For the third straight game Marquin Chandler led the Spartans in scoring, this time with a season-best 26 points on 11-17 shooting. Guard Alex Elam added 19 points and 4 assists in the winning cause. The Spartans shot 51.7% from the field for the game (30-58) and 58.3% from beyond the three-point line (7-12). SJSU also outrebounded the Toreros, 39-33.
San Diego struggled from the floor in shooting, finishing 35.2% on the night (19-54) and just 28.6% from beyond the 3-point line (8-28). San Diego converted 21 of their first 24 free throws, but managed to convert just 3 of their final 10 attempts in the game. Down by one in the final minute of play, Corey Belser missed two free throws, and Avi Fogel missed both of his attempts with 0.3 seconds left in regulation.
These two teams will meet up again on Dec. 7th in San Jose.
