(San Diego, CA) - San Diego's home exhibition game with UC San Diego Saturday afternoon was supposed to be a routine tune-up for a Torero team that opens the regular season at Arizona State on November 20th. Instead the Division II non-scholarship challengers from La Jolla built up a 13-point first half lead and held on to defeat West Coast Conference member San Diego 78-72 at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion.
UCSD, a team that qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2004, used a 22-7 first half run to hold a nine-point advantage at half time. Triton center Margaret Johnson finished with a game-high 18 points and junior guard Andrea Herold distributed six assists.
San Diego auditioned four true freshmen Saturday, including starters Michelle Augustavo (Bothell, WA) and Amber Sprague (San Diego, CA). Sprague led USD with 15 points and nine rebounds. Augustavo also approached a double-double, scoring 12 and clearing eight boards.
USD used 10 different players Saturday. Four reached double figures in scoring. Freshman Amanda Rego (San Diego, CA) was 5-of-8 from the field and totaled 13 points. Returner Tiara Harris (Colorado Springs, CO) scored 13 and sophomore guard Ashley Voisinet (Irvine, CA) had seven rebounds.
