(San Diego, CA) - No. 23 San Diego used 12 different players to post its fourth consecutive sweep, a straight game victory over Ivy League Champion Penn (30-23, 30-26, 30-13) Saturday morning at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros (5-2) received 16 kills from sophomore Emily Haas, matching her career-high, and another outstanding performance from senior All-American candidate Devon Forster. Penn (2-3) was held to a team hitting percentage of .037. The 2004 University of San Diego Invitational pits USD against Oregon State tonight at 7pm.
The Quakers, a team that has won three consecutive Ivy League Championships, pulled even with USD at 25-25 in game two. The Toreros ran off four straight points to claim the game and eventually went on to cruise in the third and decisive game 30-13.
A number of new Toreros saw their first career action in front of San Diego's home crowd. Freshman setter Jessica Nyrop and classmate Moira McCarthy, along with newcomers Laurel Abrahamson and Erin Wiskar all made contributions Saturday morning.
USD upperclassman Lindsey Sherburne passed out 51 assists. Forster killed 15 in the victory and also led the Toreros defensively with 14 digs.
