MALIBU, Calif. (AP) -- Glen McGowan and Yakhouba Diawara scored 22 points apiece and Alex Acker added 21 as Pepperdine beat San Diego 83-67 in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Waves (11-5, 1-0) were trailing by 12 points with 5:52 left in the first half when they began a 23-2 run that carried over into the first four minutes of the second half.
The Toreros (8-6, 0-1) were shooting better than 50 percent and had made five of seven three-point attempts when they suddenly went cold.
McGowan scored 19 of his points in the second half when Pepperdine, leading only 35-33 at halftime, took over the game. The team's leading scorer with 20.6 points per game, McGowan saw limited action in the first half after picking up two quick fouls. He collected his third in the first minute of the second half but remained on the court for the rest of the game.
San Diego's Brandon Gay had a game-high 26 points.
One game after McGowan became the 33rd player in Pepperdine history to reach 1,000 career points, Acker became the 34th when he hit a three-pointer with 11:07 remaining in the game.
